Just a quick question ..... how much bandwidth is used by youtube ? The reason Im asking is ..... i have a young guy staying here at the moment who lives on you tube, and Im getting emails from Telstra advising me Im at 80% ...90% of my limit. He assures me its only minimal ...... just seems odd, never happened before he arrived.
Tried to call telstra ... but 30 min wait.

YouTube can use up your bandwidth you are downloading a movie every time you watch a YouTube so it can mount up fairly quick if you are watching a lot of them

just lock him out of your internet, if your net work is password protected just change the password, or add mac address filtering and make sure his mac address is not on there and he will be met by the old Unable to connect to the internet.

All good advice.

You Tube downloads the file of the movie being watched and stores it in the cache. As an example UH-1H is about 100 MB for a 6 min clip, watch 10 of those in an hour and there is 1GB gone like that.

Lock the fella out or get him to pay for the bandwidth he's burning

Apart from the addiction factor which is far from healthy (although having succumbed to the odd "click-frenzy-fest" myself now and again, totally understand the allure), usage will be highly variable. Most YouTube videos are at 360p or even 240p which, even for a full day, might only clock up 1GB (depending on how long a "day" we are talking about, of course...). However, once one starts heading into 480p, 720p and full HD, all bets are off, and one can really start chewing thru the monthly GB allowance in short order. If you don't feel this guy's addiction is unhealthy, just ask for $5 a day to cover his usage (which will include sundries like the cost of the electricity to run the router / computer) and, provided you don't mind him slowing down your connection (when it comes time for you to share it with his 'tubing), that might help to either put the brakes on or help you pay for it. smile.gif Telstra are pretty expensive for their GB packs, but not massively so. I've swapped to NOW (not sure how available they are outside HB), and I get 75GB a month incl phone for $73 - and if I've not used any of the 75GB it rolls over to the next month. Even after very heavy 'tubing (in HD, incl several Nat Geo 1.5 hour docos) over the last 3 weeks, I've still got 94GB available. smile.gif

As mentioned, it really can suck the data- Far more than gaming in fact.
I find it interesting how many people think that streaming data (i.e. youtube) isn't 'downloading' it: It has to get onto your computer somehow!

learnt this lesson well having a couple of homestay uni students from foreign lands where Youtube access seems to be "regulated"(dang i am PC) and trying to impress upon them the cost of NZ stuff......... as its a requirement for them to have internet access etc I found it easier (and the fact i had been with the ISP for a few years, didn't want to change email addys for business etc, lazy) MAXNET's unlimited suited our situation fine.... (does throttle back if they suspect P2P)

keen to set up MAC list on our router, gives me back a bit of control and stops them sharing password to visitors

its a heck of a learning curve but good to see other cultures and how they operate.................. now to just work on the 'you don't have to slam a door to shut it' method (and some basic manners)

laugh.gif Good luck with that one. After 40 years of "training" I know a certain member of my family who still eats with his mouth open and slams doors to close them... dry.gif

The other issue of course is that New Zealand is one of the few countries that charges internet based on data, not speed. Its always a source of amusement for overseas visitors 'what do you mean you have a data cap?!'

And don't forget, Timmo, that outside of NZ the local ISPs are likely to get fined for their false advertising of "broadband". NZ doesn't have proper broadband available to the masses: it has ADSL which isn't broadband. Only once one exceeds certain speeds (well in excess of our paltry 1-1.5Mbps down-stream speeds) does one qualify a services as "broadband". I've never actually seen the "offical" broadband figure, but given that many developed countries get 20, 30, 40 - even 70Mbps down-stream speeds (in some parts of Asia I've heard of 120Mbps), I'd say the figure must be at least 10Mbps (at a guess). Just think how much dosh Telecom & the rest of the ISPs have made over the last few years, fleecing us for "super dial-up" connections at prices 2, 3 or 4 times the international average. angry.gif And guess how much they'll now start gouging us for fibre access? Answer: as much as is possible. dry.gif

Yes, would have to be something like that: I've not heard of any deals through normal channels like that (not even close). Mind you, my $75 covers landline phone as well, and I'm finding that 75GB is actually more than enough.

I download and keep stuff from there, things like tv documentaries etc. That really shows you how much you are using. I downloaded a doco last night that was 1hr 14 minutes, and I downloaded the 720p version. It was 1.1gb. (just to give you an idea). Does no doubt depend a bit on the uploader.. but here's an example I've just checked on..

15min at 1020p, is 650mb
15min at 720p is 329mb
15min at 360p is 79mb

Orcon Genius does unlimited downloads for $99 a month. Inc unlimited national calling. Terms and conditions apply mind you winkyy.gif

Yeah, something called "fair use policy", I believe... laugh.gif Which means it's not really unlimited at all. blink.gif
