Arr Pete you tease me , as CP pointed this was 1921 , back then they even got out on the wing strut to change the oil ... ole Smithy ( to the uneducated 'Charles Kingsford Smith') had a crew member do that very feat over the Tasman , think he happened to be a crazy Kiwi called Charlie Ulm ... only thing they did'nt do mid air was wash the windscreen of the bugs .
