An interesting statistic for you.
Most years, more airline passengers will die in-flight for medical reasons than die in plane crashes.
With between quarter and half a million passengers in the air worldwide at any one time, that's not surprising.
Luckily, estimates put the likelihood of at least one medical practitioner being on board as high as 85 percent.
Dr Rob Ray, an anaesthetist and qualified commercial pilot trained in aviation medicine, is today addressing an gathering of medics in Australia on what to expect when responding to in-flight emergencies.
He estimates more than 1000 people will die in-flight each year from an unexpected medical reason, compared to about 750 in a commercial plane crash.
DrRay himself has been called to assist in 10 in-flight emergencies.
