Congradulatinos

So there gos anothor dial up user, is there anyone else or just me now

Can any one sugest a really cheap broacdbadn plan that is unlimited? I used recived 95mb last night on my dial up  Although having dial and a second phone line is certainly much better as I only have to get off if someone wants to conect on my parants pc.

Enjoy your broadband Andrew :P

I'm only on 256k download, 128 upload with a 5 GIG data cap- nothing special I know, but it was the same price as my Xtra unlimited download dial up, just $29 a month.

Ah wow, thats a fairly low-end plan, but definately better than dial-up (however, saying that, most users' upload speed would probably be 128 as well :P ).
Congratulations Trolly, and err, I got a pre-emptive strike in I think (I hope it counts).

Hi Jimmy

Getting Broadband plans can be confusing and then understanding how Data usage works makes it worse. When you say unlimited well all Broadband is unlimited its just the speed you dowload and how much at that faster speed, before they throttle you back to just faster than Dial Up speeds.

Most of the Broadband plans around from the majors like Telecom, Ihug, Orcon, Slingshot etc etc require you to have toll calls as well.

You can get starter plans for as little as $30 which like Trolly has is 6 times faster than Dial Up with options to Throttle back to just faster than Dial Up. Catch is most require you switch toll providers.

The other thing is getting hooked to a 12 month Contract which if the plan dont work for you is not a good option.

Heres a rough idea on where to look!

www.slingshot.co.nz cheapest package 256 (6times Dial Up) with a incredible 25GB data limit. And toll calls work out cheaper than telecom with the same 2 hour capped callings plans.

On the whole this is a good deal except you may have a 12 month contract!

www.orcon.net.nz On the face of it looks a good deal until you see no caps on toll calls and they dont have a data cap so you exceed the 5GB per month they will charge you $10 for another data block. Sorry Trolly they dont rate highly in that regards. Again a 12 month contract maybe.

www.kol.co.nz A recent newcomer to Broadband offering 10GB on a 256 connection again a $10 charge for exceeding data allowance and a curious thing they use the same Tolls package as Orcon?

Slingshot comes out as the best in regards Data and Toll call package.

However there is

www.inspire.net.nz you know them they provide out Multiplayer server :) They have a nice couple of packages for $30 gets you 1GB and throttle or pay for more option although for a extra $5 you would be better off using the 5GB with throttle option. Also you dont need to change Toll Provider.

Now here is one I am seriously considering changing to as I am not bound by any contracts any more!

www.wxc.co.nz You pay a base price of $26.95 and 0.01c per mb of date ($1.20 per GB) NO contracts and toll calls which look a great deal is optional. This package is great as you pay for what you use rather than for a large block you may not use each month.

Having No contract means flexibilty to change provider :P always good in this fast moving market.

But overall Slingshot has a good plan but so does World Exchange. Personally I would do my homework and maths as to what plan suits you and of course your parents :) Dont get a plan because you mate has it look at the merits of each plan.

Oh and if you parents think $30 per month is expensive! Remind them that pre Broadband unlimited Dial up was twice as expensive as it is now and further back you had to buy by the hour.

Hope that helps you.

Nope, on one of the average slingshot plans with 6 gigs of bandwidth. ;)

Thanks dreamwever. I will pass that info on to my Dad. :D

I am reasonbly happy with dial up, for one reason, it is simple! I don't go over 150hours online and I my parants are happy and don't get charged for an extra $4 an hour :D

We will proably wait untill the broadband market quitens down a bit and becomes as dial up has become now :P

Thanks
James
