Teen arrested after laser light affects planes

Manukau Police have arrested an 18-year-old after a laser was last night pointed at three passenger planes coming into land at Auckland airport.

The teenager's facing four charges of endangering transport.

Police say the fourth charge relates to the 'lasering' of the police Eagle Helicopter which was sent night in response to complaints about the planes being targeted.

Police say crew in all four aircraft were affected with temporary flash blindness by the laser beam.

Detective Inspector Dave Lynch says people may think the act of pointing a laser at an aircraft is a bit of a joke - but the pilots involved were all affected and there was potential to endanger the aircraft, especially on a landing approach.

The charges each carry a maximum prison term of 14 year

Maybe they should have inbuilt shielding for this as those lazers are still sold down the local 2$ shop to kids and young acting 18 year olds so they will continue to do this till there is a plane brought down ,a pair of anti lazer landing shades would be the cheap way ,wait those will come once the plane falls outta the sky due to it ..

I [also] love the Mr.Plod response of sending a chopper to investigate. Duh!!!

These cheap lasers should be banned ... period. They're potentially more dangerous than a firearm.

Yeah, but that is how the government works. There's an issue so they make a stupid decision to ban things that are completely harmless most of the time. Send him to jail, use him as a warning that misconduct is not going to get thins banned, its going to get you in prison.

For what use is a laser .. a pointer on a blackboard , 2 dollar shop and other seller should treat selling these like selling cigarettes or chemist products use in science projects of the likes - i,d be interested to see or hear the result , as Deane said just a slap with a wet bus ticket .... I think time for an example to be made .

I meant a ban on importing them ... and a ban on selling them. Let's not allow them into the country in the first place.

Teens in court over shining lasers into planes
NewstalkZB | 09:11am Wed 08 Feb 2012

There's a call for tougher penalties for those caught pointing lasers at aircraft from the Airline Pilots' Association.

Labour MP Iain Lees-Galloway agrees, saying a 12 month prison term or a $10,000 fine is proving an inadequate deterrent.

Two Auckland teenagers will appear in court today, charged with shining laser lights into three planes and the police Eagle helicopter.

President of the Airline Pilots' Association Glen Kenny says at best they're a distraction, and at worst they can cause temporary blindness, or even permanent eye damage.

He says at a critical phase of flight, they're extremely dangerous.

Mr Kenny says the Government should take a leaf out of Australia's book, and ban lasers that have a beam stronger than one megawatt.

Be interesting to see the result now
