Just the use of a telephoto lens in the last couple of shots probably makes the Typhoon look bigger and closer than it really is. I've been on the flight deck of a herc in a two ship formation and looking up at the ramp of the lead aircraft, close enough to clearly identify the guys standing on the ramp !! So believe me you can get close. I'm sure Gavin Conroy has been in a similar situation looking past the ramp to photo trailing aircraft.

Exactly what I thought, Telephoto lens are deceiving.
