Hey there everyone havent been on the forums for ages.
I dont know if im the first person to post this.
im currently living in Brisbane,Australia and thought id tell people in new zealand whats happening.
first of all, i have never experienced anything like this before.
The whole city is being shut down even power will be shut off tommorow morning as the large amount of water fills the river running through Brisbane City.
Will post more info if needed, ask questions too. thought it would be good

What suburb of Brisbane are you in? I'm luckily in one of the higher suburbs away from the water, but it is very strange seeing whole suburbs submerged and it hasn't even peaked yet!

Its hard to believe the amount off water going through these towns and with Brisbane , that is a huge river , to see it on the news last night was hard understand the speed in which it come through.

My brother phoned the other day , he lives in Albury NSW and beside that town Lake Hume a man made lake and its huge , last time i was there it was 2% off its capacity due to drought , today its at its maximum and flood open to the full .

Are you guys getting heaps and heaps of rainfall in the city or is it just all the water from the mountains washing down towards the sea?

We had a heap of rainfall over the last 20 days (today is the first sunny day in ages!) but most of its from the inland. Up north and in the hinterland, its been bucketing down and last night it started to flow into the Brisbane catchment in what they call an 'Inland Tsunami.' The dam is at 180% and once it gets to 200% they will no longer have any control whats so ever. So I guess its a combo of both really!

I live near Caboolture , Northside of Brisbane. I got evacuated from work and was stuck on a train full of people crying and panicking.tracks were flooded. ill post some pictures shortly. Power is being shut down in the CBD and its like a ghost town. most people staying at home waiting.

A few nights back i watched the old 'Dam Busters' movie , looking at this it really puts it into perspective , both TV and your photo, s Ben , as all said here stay safe .

We're flying in on the 19th, hopefully everything will be alright. I'm not trying to sound selfish though - very sad that people have lost there lives.

Just spotted this in the 'flood updates' page on the herald :

Brisbane Airport has remained open throughout the flooding. The international and domestic terminals, runways, taxiways, carparks and roads are all clear of water and operating, the Brisbane Airport Corporation said in a statement this morning. Public transport to and from Brisbane Airport is available but limited.

Airport is operating as per normal.

I am in a lucky area. Although we were stranded (most of the water is starting to subside now), flooding was all around my area. Fortunently I was in a higher up area. Check out this picture of the Centenary Motorway, a reasonably large highway running past my suburb.

And a housing estate nearish to this highway.

Hey folks. Dean from PC Aviator Australia. We are based in Brisbane but I am on higher ground south of the city, where there is no sign of flooding. It is strange to know that just 10km away, a major city is a disaster zone!
I have been keen to go take a look but have heeded the advice of the powers that be to stay out of the city area to avoid congestion and create access problems for emergency services, so I haven't. The worst affected areas are actually 50-100km west of Brisbane in the Lockyer Valley/Toowoomba area where most of the 15 confirmed lives lost have been found. We have been lucky in Brisbane in that we had more time to prepare for the floods. The poor souls in these areas had virtually no warning and were caught unaware. Terrible situation at present and its still unfolding despite water levels now going down. Other areas are still be affected and facing rising rivers, especially at Goondiwindi further west of Brisbane.

I would encourage all our Kiwi friends to donate as much as possible to help out your fellow Aussies (google Queensland Flood Appeal). Remember the Anzac spirit forged between Australia and NZ is times of war and need! There will be billions of dollars damage and tens of thousands of individuals and families directly affected. The cleanup will take over 2 years. The affected area across the whole of Qld is 1,000,000 sq miles + (which is 4x the size of the Hurrican Katrina affected area in the USA a few years back). This is a huge logistical challenge if nothing else, but as we know it is a heck of a lot more than that. The ADF is working hard, and many Queenslanders not directly affected are chomping at the bit to get in and help out with the cleanup effort, but it will still be a mammoth task.

I have put the call out on other forums for any Brisbane-based simmers who have been affected directly and need assistance to put their hand up and I will try and get myself and other local flight simmers out there to help our flight sim buddies in need. If any members here are also based in Brisbane and wish to volunteer to help in these cases, let me know please. So far no simmers have requested help but it would be good to know we have people ready and willing to provide assistance should any raise their hand. If not, we will certainly be out there helping any other Brisbane residents where possible as time permits (unfortunately I have to run a business too during all this).

Anyway please do not forget the tragedy unfolding in Queensland. Thanks also for all your kind thoughts and wishes!
