Hey all, basically im planning a boys weekend away up to TG and was wondering if there maybe any camping sites or motels that are easily within walking distance from the airport,
and also is there anything in particular that we must see, or do up there to keep the boys all happy?

any input is greatly appreciated thank you

Kindest Regards

Hi there,

There is no motels or hotels by the airport, airport is pretty much in the city though, the mount is like a 6 minute car drive from airport which has quite a few places.
With regards what to do, not so much at the moment due to weather, though you do have the classic flyers avgas musuem and the jet simulator and helicopter flights and vintage planes if you got some cash. Town on Saturday night is pretty good, got a few good clubs if you want to get on the chop..

Apart from that, at the moment that's all I can think of.

regards

Chris

From my experience, theres a real rowdy campsite called 'Sanctuary Point' at Welcome Bay that goes off at New Years. Not sure about the rest of the year, its pretty dingy.

Theres a R18 campsite at the far end of the main beach called Papamoa Village Park which my mates are going to be hitting up this year, and also one right at the base of the Mount.

Maybe you should plan your trip to coincide with the next Tauranga airshow?

I'd stay away from Sanctuary Point. It's the home of quite a few long-term caravan dwellers (read - trailer tr@sh) and night time entertainment is drinking, beating your wife and smoking dope, add to that the regular Police bail checks there and I think you get the idea...

The airport is a quick trip by bus from most places in the city, and there's a back packers hotel on the Strand which is pretty well run. I'd stay there to experience the Strand night life and being able to stumble to your bed in 2 minutes.

The one at the foot of the Mount is where I use to go during my childhood weekends with my grandparents, the missus and I also got married on the beach there, up near the war memorial.

Near that camp you do have the hot pools, but there's really only one direction to go from there, and from what I can remember there isn't much there.

The cafe (can't remember the name) near the camp site has awesome food smile.gif
