Well I am sure you have heard the news that has been splashed across our TV screens for the past few days... The goverment want to build a second stadium in Auckland to host the rugby world cup in 2011, on Bledisloe Wharf.

Do you think Auckland should go ahead with this preposal, or stick with Eden Park. Why? Why not?

Aside from putting the Port of Auckland out of place, and (according to PoA Director) really really cutting it time-wise, it would be an extremely extravagant waste of a lot of money.

You can spend a fraction of the money and have the work done sooner by refurbishing Eden Park, which is already the home of Rugby Union in Auckland.

Yeah whack a new one up. It's close to everything, public transport's at its door, it'll brighten up the city and may even give some a reason to trek to Auckland.

The Cake Tin got a bit of flack at the time but the foresight of the Mayor at the time (Blumsky?) has paid off. it's an Icon now and even part of the FS world

Yea waste a few more millions on another piece of extravagance for the Jaffas rather than upgrading the road system first so we can get from all points of New Zealand to the Stadium. Another reason for the Whenuapi Airpport to go ahead so it dont take so long getting to the stadium. Add a ferry from Hobsonville and the transports worries are over

Think about it Airport to City via Ferry to watch a Rugby game instead of sitting on the Motorway for 3 hours or more

nah what a stuiped idea that is putting sixty thousand people on a wharf ,the noise from it will be crap as you can hear everything from devonport and neighbouring towns ,some nights you can hear westen springs going so having that there is ugly and a waste of money what ever happened to them pulling down the oil farm down and putting something there ,its not like unless we pay big money for tickets that we are going to be aloud to go in there ,,like the sky tower i still havent gone up there because of the money ,but ive got to look at it daily /weekly /monthly

I agree with Mike, and say don't build another stadium.

Auckland already has Eden Park, Mt Smart (formally Ericcson Stadium) and North Harbour Stadium, which when used are never filled to capacity. Every televised sports game I see at these locations always includes rows and rows of empty seats.

I am sorry to be a winging pome here- but back in England, big stadiums in the big cities are always full to the max. Perhaps this is because NZ's population is smaller than in the UK, so if this is the case, there is no need for 4 stadiums for a city of only 1 million people right?

so in summary:

Reasons why we should not build the waterfront stadium:
- it's significantly more expensive (up to $1bn)
- it can't be built in time
- too many unknowns about whether the wharf can handle the weight/size etc
- Auckland already has 4 stadiums, which as you say Trolly, are never filled to capacity except for All Blacks games
- upgraded eden park can be used for the cricket world cup in 2015
- it blocks prime waterfront land, and will have the same noise issues with apartments in the CBD as Eden Park does
- won't get used more than any other ground in Auckland - maybe once a week
- transport into the city is as bad as transport to eden park

Reasons why we should build the waterfront stadium:
- it will look pretty on tv (and flight sim)

hmmmmmmmmm. hard decision to make right there. pity the government's going to make the wrong one.

What an ugly waste of time and space considering AK Ports were considering expanding there port size in the first place if a stadium goes in there they will be losing a hell of alot of room that could be put to better use.
I reckon a down-town cake-tin style stadium is just Aucklands way of trying to compete with Wellington how sad if thats what they are attempting to do it seems to me AK has to have everything one step better than some one else.
Also on another note what ever happened to Eden Parks plans to put a stock car track on the out side of the field. ????

Well, the vote is pretty close, but the vocal majority on here appears to be against this proposal.

Money would be better spent improving the infrastructure around the stadiums, and improving the stadiums themselves. Could be done for about the same money as the new stadium.

Hmmm... One shiny new stadium, or three shiny refurbished stadiums (Eden, Harbour, and Mt Smart/Ericcson) and improved infrstructure to get there... Hmmm...

For once Trolly actually makes some sense in the comparrison to The UK! Prime example of on schedule redevelopment was Wembley stadium! Took a bit longer than plannned at the FA cup finals ended up played in Cardiff, Wales for a few years. Now the UK is preparing for the Olympics in 2012!

Why the heck do we need yet another Sports stadium in Auckland? When I first visited New Zealand back in 1993 the CBD was a pretty spaced out area since 1996 its gone nuts! Sky City was built which my brother was involved in its construction, along with several other skyscrapers! Then came Britomart the answer to the Transport woes (unless you live in the west or North And also the Americas Cup village.
Top it off the Development of the Northshore! Heck I lived on the Northshore in Torbay for a year back in 1996 when the road to Albany was still a Gravel (metal) road, the Motorway ended at Greville Road, When Albany was still a sleepy village
Then came the developers putting a well needed Motorway (if you can call that Dual carriegway a Motorway?) thru along with a massive shopping area and a nice new Sports Stadium.
In ten years Auckland has been transformed and not for the better! Its structure is poorly thought out and this stadium idea is yet another indication of it. Zeniths idea of a Ferry is probably the best solution to the transport woes of getting to the CBD and encouraging a second Airport. At least if that happens you can go from the North Shore to CBD without the bottleneck of the Harbour Bridge.

You can't hold an event like this and NOT build another stadium. Improving the other three won't do ziltch! It would cost more money to make renovate all three stadiums, than it would be to build a new one.

Sure, it's going to cost ALOT of money, but the money will be gained back. New Zealand's economy needs this so bad, its really not funny.

Do you want NZ to be remember as the poxy little country who couldn't host a decent tournament?

Maybe we can hold some of the prelims at ITM Field in Whangarei, or at Rugby Park in Invercargill. Good old fashioned stadiums with "soul." Who needs them newfangled stadiums?
