NZFF

Nothing really exciting , but , i start work in the morning at the Air Force museum here in Chc (as a volunteer at first)Its been over a year since i was able to work, and Im looking forward to doing something constructive again.

I will be looking for all the insruments for a P-40 panel , part of an on going restoration project at the museum. They have a huge store full of all sorts of things, includeing the bits the team needs....problem is , they dont know where they are......thats where i come in.
If Im able to , i will take some pics and post them (if anyones interested) so you can see the progress.

Hopefully, this may lead to some full time work....which would be great, back in my old environment (wigram) working with the things i love........

I'll keep you all posted.

I would have volunteered very easily , but sorta need moneys to survive , maybe if i win lotto i'll join ya .. they always want people course engineering would be helpful with restoration . Hey for sure keep us posted

Congrats Marty....I must be overdue for another visit to the RNZAF Museum but its a bit of hike from here. Actually the last time I was there the F-16s were due to arrive and the RNZAF staff were all quite excited about it.................

Thanks guys I had a great first day.....as i told you , its unpaid....but sooooo good to be back into something "real" again. Im not sure if it will turn out as ideal (ie paid)....but in the meantime its's great.
You just cant imagine the amount of stuff thats in that place...and more comes in everyday.......just amazing.
The P -40 project is going fine....just waitng on me ....i think

If your planning to visit the museum over the next few weeks you may see me up on a cherrypicker dusting the aircraft that are hanging in the the atrium.....moth, vampire etc......no pics please

I worked at the restoration flight for 4 years (94 - 98) (i'm in the air force) Its a great place to work, you learn so many skills the you wouldnt get any where else.Dusting the ob webs off the very top centre of the atrium is fun. The genie lift wobbles about 3 foot in all directions. Not a good time to be afraid of heights. Hope you have a good time there Marty. Have you been out to Weedons yet ? thats where all the cool stuff is.

Thanks Trev....i think Your right about learning...so much knowledge in that hanger. I was in the airforce from 74....and of course wigram was a full on base at that time...GSTS, 2 and 3 TTS , i think. Its a bit sad to see it now....i had a walk around at lunch time today, and most of the places i knew are gone....just houses now. Regarding weedons....my first married quaters was out there....great place, but i havent seen it for years.

Im really looking forward to doing more out there....they seem to be a great team.......even met my old fltsgt (charlie garner) again, after god knows how long.
Just not sure if Im ready for that genie lift

When i was out at wigram today....i saw , the very first room i had after basic training (before being moved to something elsewhere) The whole block has been moved and is now used as storage.(one room has been left as they were)

I lived in that little room for almost a year....they where much closer to the runway back then, and the sound of harvards night flying led to many sleepless nights. The showers and toilets where about 5mins walk away.....really nice in the winter.
Can you imagine any 17 year old today putting up with that......

Just thought you might be interested.....my god....my youth is in a museum

Little bit off CHCH started with autogen , Wigram , hmmmm , you do have a better camera and you have location 'location ' you would have met 'Barf' , Best you rip around the old airfield and take many Many photos of the hangers , tower, Museum , admin , fire station plus ... what ever , sides, back, top, inside - fencing

I recognise that grey blanket from my stint '82-'83!!! was initially in H block before moving to 2 mess.

You're probably right there - however, it looks like the one I had in a similar dump (Trentham 1960 Police Training School.)
