A biggie that a lot of people are failing on at the moment is not fully stopping at stop signs. Stop means stop not a coast through.

Also confidence is a big one - strike a conversation with your testing officer - show that you have the ability to drive with passengers safely.
And finally - think ahead of the car (same goes for flying an aeroplane). Your likely to be asked a few questions while driving on things like 'which way did that blue car ahead of us turn'.

I'll try and add some. Hopefully your already aware and in the habit of this though:
Don't cross your hands/arms when turning the steering wheel and don't let it slide through your hands.

missed out first time because the instructor didn't think he was actually using them - might be a good point to move your head in such a way that he can
see you're looking behind you, and do it often. The stop signs are a must, come to a complete stop, then give way to anything approaching, same with give
way signs and traffic from the right....err on the side of being over-cautious. Just drive perfectly and you'll be sweet...

Posted: Fri Jul 24, 2009 1:23 pmBe aware of your surroundings i.e. keep an eye out for any potential hazards. The testing officer may ask you to name a few potential hazards at the end of the test. e.g children playing on kerb, bird flying across the road etc

Just think of it as taking a nice man for a drive. Remember the give way rules and stopping at stop signs etc.
Strike up conversation with the testing officer as it makes you feel more confident and seem more confident.

. (still got 100% in the test though). Then again, that instructor was known for his.... angryness

Posted: Sun Jul 26, 2009 5:37 pmYeah just remember to not get overconfident either. I did a bit and it didn't help me in my test . The test is in three main parts:
1) Basic driving- like your restricted test
2) Remembering hazards- you have to remember all hazards you see that directly affect you- eg moving cars or people that could cross your path- then state what they were when you pull over.
3) Avoiding hazards- you drive down a stretch off road and state ALL hazards you see (including road narrowing, surface changing etc) and state what they are and how you are avoiding them as they happen.
I'm not sure if the whole conversation thing works- I'm sure the tester would rather see someone who is putting 100% concentration into driving rather than small talk.

When stating hazards i missed saying there was a car behind me at one of the intersections
i would go into more detail but at the moment im jumping off the walls with joy.

Just remember, passing the licensing test is one thing, but the real test starts now, driving day in day out, constantly being presented with situations where you must make decisions.
I sort of like treating driving like flying, its sort of stupid, but I think it makes me a better driver
