Yes very true i wouldent advise leaving before atleast completing NCEA LV1, I left because I had been accepted into a course to study for a Music Production Degree.

I guess the trick to keeping school enjoyable is trying to find the application to the things you are learning. I've always enjoyed education and even though there are times when Ive been learning things that I thought 'this has nothing to do with my degree/job/life', they have come in handy further down the track. Your mind is like a tool box, education is like getting more tools to put in it...sure you can build a house with just a hammer and nails but you can do a whole heap more interesting and challenging projects with a greater variety.

A large portion of the stuff the teachers are trying to teach you is really important for any sort of decent job....you may not realise it NOW but it is.

You dont just go out and design a electronic circuit or a weld a structure....you research it (study skills), you plan it (reading, writing) you model it (maths, physics) etc etc....that is without even getting close to a welder etc.

So my advice: Stay in school- It is only one more year to set you up for the rest of your life.

Fair points ive always thought of school like that but never had the drive to do it. In the industry im in its not all about what you know but who you know. Ive had jobs like setting up for Womad or other acts based on word of mouth they dont care what Ive done at school (nun have ever even asked) Jobs like that take you all round the world, Ive been to Australia and the UK with bands just as a stage hand and its all payed for! happy.gif All without any 'NCEA' qualifications, Not getting/Failing NCEA isnt the end of the world

If you know what you want to do, then of course you'd match your qualifications to that career. Not many people are lucky enough to know what they want to do at your age. I tend to get a bit tough on my kids mainly because the only real regret I have is that I was never educated. If I had to do it over, I would go against my parents, finish school, and put myself through uni.

I have three kids, two have left school, and none of them know what they want to do with their lives:) One runs a pub in London, one goes to University, where he's just changed from an engineering degree to science, and one is still at school. They will all finish school, even if it kills them:)

I've had a lot of careers, and the older I got the more I was handicapped by my lack of education. I suspect that I earn about 10% of my potential.

Totaly agree with that, After all if every one left school without NCEA we would be in a bit of trouble biggrin.gif My son will be incuraged (when he actully starts school) to do well and go right through and complete at least NCEA lvl 2 unless he becomes very dedicated to music and studies that to a level recognized by NZQA other wise I would be contradicting my life so far.

I done horrible at school I was either there but done no work what so ever or most the time I dident even turn up but i always put 110% into music, I practice for 8 hours plus a day and spend hours on end learning the theory. Its what got me about the teachers is they dident even want to know about what I done with music in their eyes (was told this to my face many times) I was going to be a loser and would always be a loser I was going no where and was destined to spend my life on the dole. If I was to turn up to school day after day and only hear that from teachers and fellow students I dident want to be there i would much rather be where my talents and hard work are respected and that ment bunking school and spending all my time hanging out at the TMEC, Busking in town and practicing with my band. It got me into a lot of trouble but realy i dident care...
