I had a 320 2 litre year 94 sedan ,not bad held the road well and lots of info on them , my one never needed much at all doing to it and was pretty grunty ,318 is the same with less power i didnt like driving that model ,only main problems roof lining always drops and seats are not that well stitched together,also value has dropped outta them heaps
this is pretty much all i know about BMW as i Own a Merc now ,old school 84 Sclass which is like driving the lazyboy around ..

European cars are a bit like Airbus very nice cars but not always reliable, wheras Japanese cars are like Boeing - built for the job! and last forever winkyy.gif

Thanks guys .... the only reason i ask is because i came upon the ultimate "have a look in my shed" story..... I went to a garage sale last week and only intended to buy some coffee mugs (which i did) .
Got talking to the old guy (86 , going on 36 ) about all sorts of things....turns out he was a pilot with Teal and flew lots of historic stuff (more later).....

Anyway ....he said he had a car in the shed.....it had been there for about 4 years, and if i wanted i could buy it.
So ....i open the "shed" ....a 4 car space full of stuff.....and there is a 99 BMW 525i , Oxford green ,a small dent in the back (just under the boot) , flat tyres, but otherwise looking good.

I asked what he paid for it ..... "$18500" about 5 years ago...but you can have it for $3000 as is"...... What do you say?

Could start with, "Well, lets see it going." and "So why isn't it going?".

I have found BMW to be "generally" reliable but expensive to fix. Which I imagine doubly so in NZ. Definitely not be kind of car that can be fixed properly on the cheap. The later models need specialist diagnosis, servicing, etc.

Dont get me wrong, i rate BMW and prefer to the less involving drives from Mercedes & Audi but NO car is ever a bargain. If it was a 911 though....hmmm....

Just like Airbus, Beemers are beautifully engineered and put together.
That 5 is a lovely vehicle.
Flat tyres... it's been standing a long time, then.
Any machine left improperly stored is going to deteriorate, and might need some restoration!
Rust, oxidation, wasps! perishing seals.

As pointed out above, BMW bits are not cheap.

I'd pump up the tyres, spend $100 on an AA check, and then drive it until the wheels fall off without spending another cent on it.
That way the annual cost becomes reasonable.

A 911 wub.gif ...... Good advice , Ive had a Merc , Renault , and Peugeot in the past and Im painfully aware of the repair costs.
Going back today to do a survey with a friend of a flatmate who works on them (BMW) .... and a transporter trailer . If i dont go ahead with it , i think he will.

Will report back.

Charl , its been sitting for about 3 years under a cover inside ..... but even so (as you say) oxidation could be a problem (They have aluminium radiators )

If it "was" a rooted 911 for NZ$3500 you could still buy to park in the living room to look at instead of the TV winkyy.gif

Yeah its a nice ride and are planning on keeping it till it runs back up in price ,not far off a classic and my favorite car since i was a kid walking past Jerry Claytons car dealers

and what im going to do over time ,already have the tints done

just need those mags and ill be happy ..

good luck on the BMW whatever you end up doing ...

Nah just time sitting outside not getting used ,the paint peeled off and rust started ,diff freeze up and i wasent able to start it ,so yeah just sitting there can do some damage that at first cant be seen ..R.I.P to a good car

Great pics Mike ..... the Merc will look awesome with the tint and the mags.
Re the 525 in the shed ..... my mate decided to take it...he knows the beast.

I have a 98 525i , and that is keeping me on my toes.... dont need another ( but it was tempting) .
The BM i have , was an as is where is ....but the dude put a new radiator in it (to sell) and gave me all the bits i need to get it legal . Its just finding the time to do the work.....the guys at wigram have been a real help. I reckon , another month and I'll be ready to put it on the street.
Would be nice to take it up to Omaka for a run .... Ian and greg in the back...maybe Rob as well smile.gif

Same colour as the "shed" one , but the wheels arent the same . Im dreading new tyres ... those are 245/40 18's .... unsure.gif
