C-5 trivia

Postby Splitpin » Tue Oct 07, 2025 6:00 pm

Just finished reading an article in KiwiFlyer about the USAF C-5 into Whenuapai.
Amazing beast. Being a C-5M it has the new engines giving it 200,000 pounds of thrust !
Compared to the B model, 22% more thrust, can take off in 30% less runway distance with a 58% increase in climb performance, and carrying in excess of 261,000 Ibs.
When it arrived it went past the runway turn off point, but due to four wheel nose gear,(turning through 120 degrees) and castering of the rear main gear, she just did a 180 and headed back down the runway.
A (ground) turning radius of just 22m.

I'm impressed.

Never seen one, and missed this one (both trips) only through laziness.
It always presents as such a massive thing, but really, a B747-8F is a bit bigger.
Must be the low stance/high wing/T tail that gives it that look.
