While I was out...

Postby emfrat » Sat Aug 24, 2024 5:18 pm

I really needed to run through to Ipswich this morning, to get a 25" LG screen for AUD99. Its 28" predecessor developed a column of dead pixels some time ago and I no longer had a spare - but I have now. The 22" one can return to being spare and the new one should provide better views from Birdcam, especially when Birdcam03 comes on stream.
It is only a week to the first day of Spring, but the birds are already at it. Nice peaceful departure this morn but when I got back an hour or so later, I was met by a defensive strike formation because Mr & Mrs Willy Wagtail had started renovating last year's nest. I never got around to knocking it down, so I suppose it will have to stay now. They brought off three broods last season.

Wonderful news, Mike!
There are many tall trees in my back garden, on the local Council Estate, surrounded by all the neighbours' tall trees, so I am lucky to have all sorts of birds visiting my garden all through the day (when they are not off foraging somewhere else!).
Wood Pigeons, Doves, Magpies, Starlings, Thrushes, Hedge Sparrows, occasional Land Gulls, and an assortment of very small birds; Robbins, Wrens, Goldfinches Tits, etc...!
It's always a joy to observe them throughout the day!
There is always the danger of some of the neighbour's Cats intent on killing them, for no good reason, so I have to keep an eye out for them and throw stones at them (The Cats, not the Birds!).
I feed the Birds with all my food scraps and an assortment of Seeds!
They are a joy to behold and brighten up my every day!
I collect their discarded feathers to adorn the handlebars on my Motorcycle to remind myself that I am also a bit of a flyer on my Motorcycle and an avid Aeroplane Flyer on my MS Flight Simulator!
Always remember...You don't find Birds on Planet Mars, so there's no point in going there, trust me!
Cheers all.... ...!

ahhh yes. When we moved into the current place it was the starlings getting in around the gutters. Got that sorted pretty quick. The swallows try every year to nest in the wood shed, which I don't really mind but they crap all over over the baby fergy. When you have been around since 1956 you deserve not to be crapped on.

Now the magpie numbers have been reduced thanks to some fast moving .22 projectiles, we get the kingfishers and the tui's. Both are welcome visitors :D

In a large bush next door there are a colony of sparrows and another of Double-barred Finches, about half the size. I also see occasionally some even smaller birds called gerygones. Those chaps can fly through a diamond mesh cyclone fence flat out with their eyes wide open, which they do to reach the dew on the grass next door. Feral pigeons are the biggest pest here. I top up the birdbath and next thing a dozen or more of them have jumped in. They soak up so much that i have to top it up again. A small Bren would sort them out.

About 600 folk around here have banded together to set rodent traplines.
This year the garden has FLOCKS of Tui.
I've never seen more than one or two previously.

Next milestone: bring back the Kiwi!
