Auckland Islands, bar checking (calibration echo sounder) at start of day, 2 guys standing outboard of Astrolabe (25 foot Survey Motor Boat, 7.5 tonne), 1 each side setting the chains (one hand for the navy, one hand for jesus) me (as coxn) standing on coxn's seat, standing up through hatch and passing on reports etc, codan radio on, aerial up (about 2 metres, spring mounted on top of roof) WASP flies over, cool pilot that'd saved us heaps of yomping up hills etc, chasps wave out, WASP heads in, buzzes us at full noise, pulls up almost vertical, throws into a 180 (torque turn we called it - remember we were jacks, not crabs) and returns to us a little bit lower though a weenie bit faster(??) - CRACK!!!! antenna going side to side, hell for leather, top 12 inches or so missing .......... awesome!!! Ships WEO (weapons electrical officer) wanted to hang out of pilot and charge him, SMB crew attested to aerial getting damaged on lowering the boat in the morning
