Ive just been reading about this Orcon voip/router thing.....sounds pretty good. $70 a month, with a 30gb data cap (can be more) keep your own phone number, no line rental etc.....is anyone here using it?

Hmm been thinking about this myself so I wouldnt mind hearing feedback of anybody that may have it. I was about to ring Orcon, but Xtra sent me a letter doubling my cap to 20gb without any cost so that delayed any decision. The hassle of changing email adreses is a bugger

That is the primary concern for most all your payware backups and the shear expense of so many , I almost changed couple years back with an outfit , they said their service was cheaper , I'd stick with my tried and trusted TelstraClear .

I have just changed over to Orcon. Been with Telstra for years but Orcon's offer of $70 for phone and 30 gigs with voicemail that emails you the messages, free caller ID and file sharing capability on the modem was too good to pass up. Telstra was $56.76 for the phone, plus $44.98 for adsl, plus $12.22 per 10 gig pack. That works out at $138.40 per month for 30 gigs.

I've elected to have 50 gigs at just under $100 per month. Email address does not concern me as I never used a Telstra email, all my mail goes through Gmail. I have set up a redirection with the new Orcon mail address to my Gmail to catch the answerphone messages.

On the downside....

1. I have been switched over to Orcon as of Monday but have yet to receive the Genius modem. So, I have no phone at home now - but Orcon are transferring to my mobile at no cost to me. I have set up the answerphone and that is working fine though.

2. The Orcon phone system and helpdesk is utter cr@p. Prepare to do a lot of re-dialling and waiting. If you can, do things onlline.

I have just managed to get my old Netgear router connected to Orcon (uses a fixed IP address and few different settings) so am online - connecting at 7 megabits per second quicker than Telstra.
