Well there's a good ol' storm going on in Welly right now, so I decided to go to our big window overlooking The airport icon_arrow.gif Miramar North, I saw a few good flashes, then after maybe 2 minutes, there was a brilliant blinding flash , and a house about 200m from me was hit by a huge bolt. At the same time there was the biggest roar I have ever heard, which sent the previously unphased dog running under the bed. I know it sounds a bit boring on 'paper' but considering we never get thunderstorms, but that has to be one of the most incredible things I have ever seen.

Wow! As I was typing this, a house in Maupuia, on the far side of the valley just got hit again. . this sh*t's wild! ohmy.gif biggrin.gif

I caught it on video.

Holy [swear word here] it was the biggest I've ever seen
Should I upload the video showing the biggest flashes?

I saw one sky-ground contact in the harbour as well.

Isn't it evident?? Boeing are my favourite aircraft.

P.S. that's is my real birthday but I wish to keep my real age secret to keep you all pondering.

Duh.. laugh.gif

I would've, but one camera's flat, and Dad took the other one flying. I guess that means he might have some good shots when he gets home.

Yeah seriously that vid would be great.

Best ones I've ever seen were in Asia during the monsoon season its just a continuous succession of lighting and thunder you get them like that at least a couple of times a year in NZ at least its good for our ozone layer. biggrin.gif

Two years ago while in a holding pattern waiting on a Heathrow slot we were hit by lightening. It was a huge bang! Its a great way to make the pax go silent. Took the usual 10 mins or so for the FD to report what it was and that we hadn't lost an engine even though it may have sounded that way.

Even better was a quick explanation about how an aircraft disperses electricity through all the wands on the wings etc after being hit .

Nice video Tui- but it doesn't look that scary lol. I've seen massive sheet lightning in the Canary Islands when I was a kid, and that scared the cr@p out of me at the time!

I saw on the news last night that a RNZAF B757 was stuck by lightning over Australia and had to make an emergency landing at Brisbane.

it's funny how sometimes a plane can be hit, and sometimes nothing happens at all, and sometimes it can even cause the aircraft to crash. Does it depend on where it hits or what?

Yeah generally what happens to aircraft is a phenomenon called St Elmos fire, what happens is the static electricity builds up on the fuselage and at night the nose of the aircraft glows. Every so often though they get struck by lightning generally like St Elmos fire the charge goes around the airframe causing no damage but sometimes they get unlucky and the lightning damages things such as antennae and thats where you get problems.

Check out this video of St Elmos fire:

The most dangerous thing about thunder storms isn't just the lighting it is also the ice and updraft/downdraft which is a hazzard to aircraft.

Lightning:

LMAO check this out Tornado:
