Might've been topical for our August Screenshot contest!
This was taken 2 years ago on a Convair 580 charter flight I took to NZCH.
What you see around the windshield is ice...

18 SEP 2004 Icing caused New Zealand Convair 580 crash in 2003
The New Zealand Accident Investigation Commission concluded that the October 3, 2003 crash of a Convair 580 was caused by icing. The airplane, on a cargo flight to Palmerston North, descended through an area of severe icing. It stalled, broke up due to overstressing of the wing structure and crashed into the sea.

Nice shot... not so nice story :(

Fortuantly you wern't on the flight that crashed, I'll remember not to board any Convairs in winter time from now on!

Nice pic. I believe the icing that caused the 2003 crash was of a particularly nasty, unusual severity; I don't think the CV-580 has any serious de-icing deficiency otherwise.

They flew through freezing rain, apparently.
Not much you can do if the aircraft systems aren't up to it.

Postpone the flight until the weather clears is the better option.
