As some may have seen or heard, the RAAF F-111's are in NZ for the entire week on Low-level ops throughout the country. They had a hoo-har ceremony on Saturday (I think?) to welcome them. Ive seen a few intercepting the ILS @ Ohakea, which requires overheading Palmy.

There is a current NOTAM out for the aircraft:

A1360/07 FROM: 31 JUL 2007 05:00 TO: 03 AUG 2007 00:01
HJ
CTN DUE RAAF F111 ACFT OPR FM NZOH AD LOW LVL OVER NZZC FIR.

The rumour is that some F-18s will be here in a few weeks/months time. The Aussie combat force seem to be coming here on a more regular basis.

The Aussies have always come across with their F111's to practice flying over our terrain. They do the same with their J model hercules too. Just coz we do not have a combat force has nothing to do with it. Just makes the presence of jets more rare.Deane

Nope it has nothing to do with that at all its for trainning both for NZ and Australias Defence Force. Back in the 80s before the Nuclear ban in NZ the US used to bring their aircraft and weapons to NZ as part of ANZUS and had some awesome air battles over the country(F-16s, F-15s, E3s, F-14s etc). In one exercise they brought an entire Carrier Battle group down here for trainning. The negative side to this though was it made NZ a nuclear target for the Soviets(in all there were 4 or more bases in NZ that were nuclear targets that would most definately have been hit if a war had of happened). NZs terrain is a good area for pilots to practice Night and Day strike missions as well as CAS and live firing. Its not only good trainning for the pilots but also for the guys on the ground directing the CAS missions such as forward observers etc.
