Whats the legal age for being allowed in the jump seat. Also do you think it would be possible to get in the jump seat on a 777-200?

I don't think there is one. The key to getting on the jumpseat on any a/c is really just to know the pilot. The biggest a/c i've been in the jumpseat is the old Polynesian Airlines 737-800 that used to fly Welly-Nadi.

I think there are three actually, but I really want to get on one.
I'll surf the airliners.net forums to find out how and if I can.

don't think there is a "legal" age, but since 9/11 all that has changed, you used to e able to clear it with the airline and the pilots in advanc, but now i dout you could, unless as Victor_alpha_charlie said you know the pilot well. good luck!!

Its Illegal in Australia, United Kingdom and United States. Perhaps if you had an ASIC Card or New Zealand equivelent, as well as having it arranged earlier, you may get it, But Still then I doubt it-

On Air Nelson, and Mount Cook- Id imagine they would let you in

OK that's weird, coz whenever i'm with dad on a flight and he knows the pilot (often very well) we'll always go up and say hi.. And apparently there's this really cool guy on NZFF that can try and arrange for fellow simmers to get in the Jumpseat of the Vincent Dash-8! hmm who could that be?

I know ARNZ staff can get the jump seat if the flight is full. As for the public not a chance

My friends a Flight Attendant for Air NZ, and crew don't have a problem getting the jumpseat as long as they have their I.D.

For the general public, pretty much count the Jet's out unless you know the pilots, but Mount Cook & Air Nelson are pretty good, last time I flew on Saab all I did about 6 weeks prior to my flight was write a letter to Air Nelson requesting the jumpseat explaining my trip was in relation to my Tourism course & it wasn't a problem, also got granted the jumpseat on the 737 from Wellington back home to Dunedin, but the morning of that flight there was a crew change and the new Captain wasn't aware of my situation so couldn't ride shotgun But there's definately no harm in contacting the appropriate person at AirNZ (Flight Ops Manager) and just explain your a keen aviation head etc, and see how you go, might pay to write a letter & attach couple forms of I.D

seriously tho, from some of the discussions on pprune, in Australia, there are laws around who is actually allowed on the flight deck etc... Most of the companies also have their own reg's... ie. company employee, proper security, captain has final say etc.

As for why people still do it here in NZ... well a dash-8 isnt really going to do a lot of damage and lets face it... security is a bit of a joke really... you only need a drivers license to get on board and fairgo have proved how easy it is to get a fake drivers license...

so I dont see why they wouldnt let you in the jumpseat as long as the captain signs off on it...

I know my wife has been a couple of times on the QF 73's... but she has the ASIC with the lovely orange (cleared for airside) background... and works for the company... so it frees up a seat for a fare paying passenger

Yea its who ya know. Air Nelson are pretty good as long as ya explain etc, better if ya know one of the crew. Ive NEVER been able to crack Mt Cook and ive tried heaps, they dont want a bar of it. I did have a friend no long ago ride up front because the plane was full. Best jumpseat ride ever for me though was the J41 hands down !

Having tried, failed and succeeded on a fair few accounts, here is the list to bother with, and the dont try list:

Air NZ (737->747) - Dont Bother (Air NZ flat policy of no one up there, not even Air NZ staff who arnt pilots).

Eagle Airways (B1900D) - Yes by all means ask, there is no hostie and no cockpit door. So im sure your welcome to go and ask, and just stand by the 'door'.

Air Nelson (Saab and Dash) - Very leaniant, got up numerous times. Its generally better if you know someone like a Captain or Training Captain etc... They do prefer some aviation ID.

Mount Cook - Same policy as Air NZ, no jumseaters. Ive tried and so have mates, just like A185F, NO CHANCE!

Thats it really, Air Nelson is your best bet really though as long as you know someone. Otherwise the prospects are pretty grim.

hmmmm so what about Eagle Airways here in NZHN any chance of being a Jumpy with them would be interesting to go on a flight with them.

PS: and to all you Plankers I have not switched from the light side to your dark side(lol) just reckon it would be cool to go along in the Jumpy seat just to clarify that for ya lol.

All I can also say is that you are old enough.

Back in the ole' days (pre 9/11) I managed to get into just about every cockpit of any airliner I was flying on (Air New Zealand 747, Britiannia 767, Monarch 777, Air 2000 a320, Leisure Air 737) by simply pushing the flight attendant bell (mid flight) and asking if I could go and chat to the pilot.

Since those days, I have only sat in the DC-3 jumpseat, which was a wicked experience also.

Im going in the jumpseat of an a320 in a month or two. Going to rarotonga for 3 days then comming back on the jumpseat.
