I saw it was gusting over 50kt at CH a few times yesterday, that would be a challenge even for an A380.

There was a Qantas A330 doing racetrack pattern at 5,000ft overhead today, instead of going to Brisbane.
Not sure what drove that?

Perhaps he forgot his playlunch, and was burning off fuel so he could go back and pick it up? Wouldn't take long at 5000'.

I was told they are controlled out of Melbourne.
Maybe the weather did something outside the Rulebook en route.

Regarding the A-380, if RWY029 was extended at NZCH, those big guys would have a better chance.
I'm sure there was, and maybe still a plan to do that.

There were some extreme weather events in the S-E corner - high winds, fires and smoke etc but nothing affecting Brisbane. A mystery really.

Regarding Runway 029 and the Big Guys...years ago I saw a Singapore Airlines T7 land there...aborted his landing on the main runway.
