A place for 'real world' pilots and aviation enthusiasts to discuss their hobby

For my seven hundred and seventy seventh post, I present her majesty and your sovereign, Queen Elizabeth the seconds 777 arriving in Wgtn. Hmm, this is like 5 years ago at least..

Wow, I didn't know the Queen came to NZ that recently, and I certainly didn't know a 777 could land at Wellington! If this is the case (as Jon has just proved), then why don't ANZ, and other airlines, fly overseas long haul from NZWN?

Also, I think it is pretty cool that you actually managed to photograph the Queen (shot 4)- not many people can say they have done that

Plus, how come there arn't more photos of the ol'e ANZ BAe 146 around? Are the the ex-ansett ones? Why did they get rid of em' and when? Where are they all now? I thought the ARNZ model was a compleatly fictional one (in the ANZ livery) untill I saw that photo :o

There is no gate at NZWN big enough to take a 777.
That's why they parked the Queen next to a stepladder... <_<

and do you think the 777 would of have been? When it has all the fuel and passengers it might not be able to lift.

I tink they are going to fly international (tho Aussie is really an international destination and is flown to there already) again with the introduction of the 787's.

Sometimes Trolly your insight escapes me being such a Flight buff you claim to be ;)

Memory serves me right which it dont as I thought it was a 767 used. Special permission was sought to allow British Airways to land at Wellington for that visit. under normal circumstances it would not have been allowed to have landed at Wellington. Most likely Ohakea or Christchurch for a Aircraft of that size.

I think it is pretty cool that you actually managed to photograph the Queen (shot 4)- not many people can say they have done that

Since the photos was 2002 the chances of finding more on the internet are pretty slim since the Digital Camera era was in it infancy. I have a few photos knocking around from my old SLR camera.

Your kidding me right? I miss the old smelly BAE 146  had a few good trips back in the late 90s. One of those old birds is flying for Jersey European now and NO they did not belong to Ansett the Ansett fleet in 2002 was tucked up in Melbourne.

Edit:-
British Aerospace BAe-146-300 (cn E3175)

I bet that was a give away

Sorry will not be able to scan my photos as I am heading off today for a nice long holiday 3 months away from the modern trappings of life

Also the runway length at Wellington means that the aircraft cannot be heavier than x amount at landing, for safety purposes, which means that the aircraft landing would have to have less cargo and passengers on board than it can take, and therefore not really be economically viable.
Theoretically, they could land almost any aircraft at Wellington (pending approval) but they would have to be within weight limits for the runway length, and so its not 'worth it' economically to operate large jets out of there. ;)

Alex is quite right, economics is the other big factor now. Air NZ seem to have gone with frequency rather than quantity. You would struggle to fill a 777 every day unless it was peak, and then if its capacity is limited why bother. I don't believe the 787 will see wide bodies back in Wgtn, my understanding is Mr Norris sees no purpose in 787's out of wgtn. Hopefully I'm wrong

Ah yep, the Queens flight must have only had a few personal on board, and little luggage then.

Your kidding me right? I miss the old smelly BAE 146?

Why would I be kidding? I love all the BAe aircraft! I even have the Aerosoft Eurowings payware model which is brilliant, but the closet livery to a down under scheme I have is the old Qantas Link one- although the freeware ARNZ model is great too :)

One of those old birds is flying for Jersey European now and NO they did not belong to Ansett the Ansett fleet in 2002 was tucked up in Melbourne.

So, apart from that one Jersey aircraft, where are the rest of them? How many did ANZ operate, and were they part of the Link airline? Why did ANZ get rid of em' and when? Where are the rest now?

Well an ANZ 777 came in the other day apparently (something like the 25th)

Anyway, Jon do you remember the time the ANZ 747-200 came in to Wellington on the day that they opened the new Wellington Airport terminal (that my dad's work designed. Actually my dad did the departure lounge for gate 21)

Isn't it evident?? Boeing are my favourite aircraft.

P.S. that's is my real birthday but I wish to keep my real age secret to keep you all pondering.

The BAe's used to operate out of Rotorua when I flew a lot between Welly and Rotorua when I lived in Khandallah, so they would have been in use up until around 97/98 I think... ;)
