Things would be getting quite slippery at that stage

Bugger! I flew CNI back in '08. Was never a fan of the underpowered 140HP Cherokee ( nor the 160HP for that matter!). Makes it harder to get ones self out of a sticky situation.

In a situation like that it wouldn't make any difference if you had a 10 hp or a 2000hp motor if it had failed just after take off, well maybe the extra weight of a 2000hp motor would help your decent a little faster.

Might have gotten you a bit higher in the first place though!

That is one off many things that kill WWII pilots and the very experienced ... the share weight of the engine.

I've seen CNI regularly at Ardmore over the last month, last saw it airborne on the Christmas Eve in fact.
Always a bit of a shock to see an aircraft you recognise in the news for the wrong reasons- good to hear that there were no fatalities in what could have been a far worse outcome.

If it has been confirmed as a total engine failure then it would not have mattered. But in any other case, improved performance is usually a good thing...

"good to hear that there were no fatalities in what could have been a far worse outcome." yes indeed . Easy to replace an old piper ... but a bit hard to replace 3 souls.

They are built like Sherman tanks. Pull it out, flush it out, dry it out and fire it up.
These warm humid days are just great for carb icing as well as seed heads etc for gumming up carb jets.

Yip .. funny you mention that, the Sherman was powered by three different types off aircraft engines, even a radial engine in some models ... never fitted wings on them tho smile.gif

I'm a bird not a fish, Rick my bro did a tandem last weekend, his first jump ... he was still on a Hi when got around here, not so strangely most hang glider pilots left parachuting for the good ole hang-glider ... some off the stories they can tell.
