Unknown HS-748

A place for 'real world' pilots and aviation enthusiasts to discuss their hobby

Postby Snowman » Thu Feb 15, 2007 3:24 pm

Late morning today, an HS-748 flew into NZTG. I only saw the back of it as it passed over my work on finals at about 300 ft above me. It was white, with some black and red markings on it, but i couldnt make out what they were from the angle i was viewing it from inside the building.
Anybody know what or who's it was ???

Lawrie, I know you know your old aircraft, but what you are describing sounds like one of the Convairs. There are two of them in white with red/black markings at present. Ex Eva Air ones, like this one... (photographed at Palmerston North while it was being checked over before entering service with Air Freight NZ)

Not saying it isn't a 748, just offering a suggestion...

I immediately thought it might be a Convair 580 as well; I can't think of any HS.748s around unless there is one visiting from overseas that I'm not aware of.

I thought it must have been a CV580 as well, because as i understand it, there are no HS 748s currently in NZ,........................... but, the thing that made me think of the HS748 first, was the sound of Rolls Royce Darts, not Allison Turboprops !!
Maybe i just didnt hear correctly, with all the other noise in the building.
Guess i should have jumped in my car and raced around the corner to NZTG to have a look.............
Thanks guys.........................

Lawrie.

Didn't it enter service with Air Chathams? I snapped this one at NZAA a while back, is it one of the same:

ZK-CIF did stop at Rotorua the other day, perhaps it could have popped over to Tauranga as well. ;)

Can't argue with your photographic evidence Trolly :)

My, old, info had it as being earmarked for service with Air Freight - obviously in error

Thanks for sharing the pic.

Thanks for the link to the pic Dan. The fuselage striping is close to what i remember seeing in my brief glimpse of it over work. I was sure i heard Roll Royce Darts, not Allison Turboprops when it went over, but i could be wrong with all the other noise going on in the building at the time. Maybe i was just being hopefull
The more i think about it, the more i am being convinced that the guys are right about it being a Convair !! Guess i should have just got in my car and gone around the corner to the airport and had a look !!
