Air NZ must have supreme confidence in Boeing's ability to deliver an aircraft that is yet to exist, after their decision to exercise 4 of their Boeing 787-9 options. Mind you, the Air NZ order is nothing considering Qantas have firm orders for 45 787's in total.

p.s. how awesome is this flight deck?

I think this is an excellent move on Air NZ's part, get them while they are cheap and slots are available. Once the 787 hits the skies and improves on the expected performance, much like the 777 did, I think the airlines that havnt ordered as yet will be lining up to do so, especially since the A350 is so far behind.

Heh. They always show this sexy shot of two-tone kid hide pilot seats.
This makes passengers feel sexy too, knowing that up front are pilots who insisted on Nothing But the Best.
It's like the pics of early concept 747's (and 380's latterly), with turbocharged spa pools of champagne on the upper decks together with dance halls and Au Pair girls.

Airliners are of course sold on the golf course, to bean counter people who fly corporate charter. ANZ took a huge gamble by getting in early and thus got 'em cheap.
