Just wondering, but is it actually safe to video from the plane during take-off and landing?

I really want to do this but not sure if it's safe

If it helps I've got a SONY Handycam DCR-HC21E

i'd quite like to film my landing into queenstown. i know you can use still cameras on takeoff/landing. maybe it's best to be discreet?

i very highly doubt that by recording with a non transmitting device, your likely to bring down the plane down

Doubt it... just make sure they dont see!

A little off topic, but in India at Amritsar airport, you couldnt even use your camera when you were off the plane walking to the terminal. Ofcourse, if you didnt follow these rules, there were the scary looking cops with guns to help you make your decision...

Legal? Well I would ask one of the airstewardess' once I board. I have taken plenty of photographs out the window during previous airline flights, but never made a video. Don't they ask you to stow all loose and electrical items in the overhead compartments on TO and landing?

Having said this, I also know a friend from the UK who videoed out the window of a 737 coming into land in the Canary Islands, and captured from final approach, touch down, engine reversers, to taxi off the runway... so perhaps different rules apply for different airlines or countries...?

Hehe see two threads down... I did It really has no effect, I think the only reason it is 'prohibited' is that it is a lose object on the event of a crash landing...

my old man travels the world since the old days , pan amercia ..and has always taken the video cam recorder ,and recorded,
ive never heared of such a prohibitation on a video cam ,like said above if its non transmitting device then you are "a ok" it is just a camera at the end of the day that takes moving pictures ,it not like you are lighting a match in the tolet to cover up a bad smell and bringing a 747 down to a halt at the nearest airport ....
i say dont even ask why worry thousands of ppls do it daily all across the world
just think they would take it off you at boarding or there will be a notice saying like cellphones "do not use"

Well after seeing a qantas flight attendant running up the aisle, almost screaming at some poor chinese lady to switch her handycam off as we came in on finals (why the hell he wasnt strapped in i have no idea ) I would be somewhat hesitant to do it...

You will find they want ALL electronic devices off for T/O and Landing... hell, they make me turn off my MiniDisc player and I've seen them harassing Ipod users too...

Electronic Equipment

All electronic devices, including PDAs, laptop computers, handheld games and toys must be switched off during take-off and landing.

Portable electronic equipment such as laptop computers (including WiFi and Bluetooth enabled devices), PDAs (without mobile phones), personal music (for example, iPods) and electronic game devices may be used when the aircraft seat belt sign is extinguished after take-off and until the top of descent.

Radio transmission using personal communication devices (including walkie-talkies, two-way pagers, or global positioning systems) is prohibited at all stages of flight, as it may interfere with the aircraft's communication and navigation systems.

Safest thing to do is ask... although this runs the danger of getting the standard 'must be off' response when the less than technical FA's are faced with something they dont know about.

Interfere with Nav equipment you say?? Well if the Captain cant find the runway on finals then he doesnt deserve to be sitting in the little room at the front of the plane

ok, so unless you can get away with it, then video cameras aren't allowed to be used on landing. i think it's also a safety issue should the aircraft start crash- they don't want loose objects floating around the cabin

Last time my dad flew from Wellington-Christchurch he said that in all the announcements they gave ipods should be off for the entire flight
Then again hes not one to talk as he was filming once during the takeoff on a dash 8 somewhere in canada just as the safety briefing said "please now turn off all portable electronic devices"

So the moral of the story, It seems pretty harmless to me that something that is not transmitting would do any harm its just whether the FA's get all **** about it.

If the crew are unaware and are sitting down and you don't hold it to your eye and don't annoy other passengers then whose to know.

If crew become aware then it will be "turn it off"

Ive videoed taking off and landing on both QANTAS and Air NZ, and the flight attendents have never actually said 'no' to me if I have asked.

Air New Zealand are particularly silly in this respect.

I have had a hostess get quite stroppy when I turned on my ipod. I told her it didn't transmit so it should be OK, but she wouldn't budge. Made me turn it off and then kept coming back to check that I hadn't turned it on again.

basically just be discreet and don't make a nuisance and you can go ahead - the FA's are just waiters with a fancy uniform, some of them would be lucky to know which end of the aircraft went first

I was travelling NZAA to Honolulu on continental years ago and because of my 6'3" frame I got the seats in the front of thesection by the door so I could stretch out - fine but those armrests do not lift up so you cannot stretch out along the seat - okay it was dark and everyone was sleeping so I lay down in front of the door to get some sleep - along comes the stewardess and tells me I have to move immediately or she will call the captain , I am obstructing an exit !!!

as I replied " who the HELL is going outside?!! we are 30,000ft above the pacific! even if we drop straight down it takes 5mins to hit the water and I don't think anyone will be using the door then anyway!

This is more for your safety than anything else. If they have to pass verbal instructions how are you going to hear this if you have your ipod on?
