Hi guys,

Just wondering, what are the differences between a Class 1, 2 and 3 CAA Medical? :)

Thanks,

Alex

Class 1 is for commercial aviation, and Class 2 is for holding a PPL (I believe), not so sure about Class 3. I have my final test for a Class 1 medical tomorrow...

I got my class 2, after 2 months and $900 later.
All thanks to someone not doing an ECG properly.

I had the same problem, I failed my ECG and was crapping muself that I would not get my Class2, but after a few tense days and a cardiologists report, it was all good and found that the ECG was too sensitive <_< I am not the only one to have failed an ECG only to be told nah its all good...

I have a current Class 2, which is great as it only expires in 5 years. I have a Class 1 booked for the 15th of December, which I am slightly nervous about. It only lasts 1 year too and at about 400 a pop, is not light in th bank...

Sigh...yet another victim of those stupid and pointless colour vision rules.

I too have a slight deficiency and after much research, contacting optometrists, going for tests and then ringing or emailing person after person the only answer that I was basically told was that the rules are rubbish. Even so they still keep these in place, and it took many years and court proceedings to have the expectations brought down.(This is all in Australia BTW, which is where I live at the moment so these are all for Australia's CASA)

But still that meant I had a restriction on my license, up until a few months ago where I passed the FALANT test and am now unrestricted.

I do know of people who are completely colour blind have gotten into the very large airlines, so what i am saying is if you want to become an airline pilot you can get past the crap regulations...good luck and dont let those meaningless rules get in your way!!

errr, but colour vision IS kinda important... if it wasnt why would they bother making the port beacon red and the starboard one green?

At night, when all you can see are little pinpoints of light, knowing which way another aircraft is heading based on the red & green is kinda handy. Its not like traffic lights where they are always in the same position.

Not to mention: PAPI's, Maps/Charts, Flares, Runway lights, taxi strips etc.

this pdf has some interesting notes relating to vision and aviation.

Judging by your sig, I assume you have already started flight training. If so, I would advise getting it done now, BEFORE you spend up large on the flying and theory tests... lot's of stories of people spending thousands on lessons etc and then finding out about diabetes/irregular heart beats etc. that they didnt realise they had.

In addition, I believe you actually need a Class 2 to fly solo.
