Thats pretty cool having an Aeroclub at an international airport, especially at NZWN! I know IFR flights don't usually coincide with the circuit traffic, but what happens when a 737/A320, or a 1900d/Dash 8 for that matter, has to do a go around? Wouldn't they just mulch the slower training aircraft? ohmy.gif

Welcome to aviation mate! I'm booked in for 5 flights a week but have only managed 2 so far due to weather/maintenance. It's something you will to get used to, especially at gusty ole' Wellington!

Don't they run different circuits for the light aircraft?

I think we do 1500ft. I think that a go-around may be in the opposite direction... Never really taken notice...I actually have no idea...

At the club the instructor varies. Why do you know some of them?

Weather. Glorious Wellington wind! I was going to go Tues, Wed, Thurs and Fri but only managed Tues, Thurs.

I would assume he meant, from runway 34, Lights would go South over the city, and Large/Jets would go out over the bay to the North.

It is not common for the airline traffic to do circuits. Just in, and out. in, and out. It is the same circuit however if a light aircraft is in the circuit with lots of arrivals and departures happening, it can expect to be waiting it's turn a lot !

Now that procedure could have its issues laugh.gif Into oncoming traffic.... No.

I asked about it. Yes they do circuits. If we were to buzzing around, they'd call us lower and the jets higher.

A185F, you fly a C185? Did you make a trip to Wellington on Tuesday? (or was it Thursday)

Oh Well I must be mistaken, I haven't yet been and done the circuits flight in a 737 at wellys. I'll have a look on the air nz booking site so I can book in a trip laugh.gif

As I said not very common. Sometimes for training in a smaller not very common aircraft where a simulator is not availiable but rare. I Have done 2 or 3 circuits at wellington in a dornier once for training but that was because there was no sim availiable.
In fine conditions an airliner will usually (but not always) fly around the circuit to land again but not stay there and do "circuits" as you would.

I did see a 747 classic doing circuits at auckland once about 15 years ago. Not sure why but was neat to watch biggrin.gif

Sorry, meant just the one circuit.

Ignore my comments on the C185 then.

Sorry to go off topic. :-)

BTW got the lesson today. biked down there - a massive headwind the whole way! Was thinking that it probably wouldn't happen. But after a wee while waiting we did end up going out. Not nearly as bad as I thought it was.

Most of the time when I was there, if an aeroplane had to go around it was due to weather so they would fly the missed aproach and then get handed off to radar. I did see a J32 do training one time where they were in the pattern for a little while. They flew the harbour circuit at about 2500ft. There were light aircraft in the circuit at the time.

Seven? laugh.gif

That is the only problem I have with training in NZ. Im sure it's great once you get past Ab-Into, but that first stage seems to be very tedious regarding the weather.

Not quite seven. Six. We've just had cr@p weather in wellington these past two weeks. Rain has been limiting visibility - ATC wouldn't be able to maintain separation. And as always wind has also been a problem a couple of days!

Hi all,

I thought I would share a rather useful tip with the guys who want to get PPL or CPL, but haven't got much time. I'm talking about the theory part here.

I decided to go for it, and get the PPL after 5 years of simming. The only problem is that I haven't got much time to actually sit down in a quiet room and learn it from a book. You could say that "Come on man, this is the way people learn", and you're right, but I found a way that doesn't actually need extra time from your everyday life, and you can learn any time of the day without a book and a quiet room.

I found this. I downloaded the sample and it convinced me (English is my second language, so clearness and understandability was quite important for me). Now I can use that 1 hour drive from my home to the workplace to learn by playing the audiobook with my car stereo. I can't do that with a book, can I. This opportunity gives me 2 hours of learning each and every day without using my free time - which I don't have anyway.

If you buy the MP3 DVD version it only costs about $220 (NZD). I decided to give it a try, and I'll also write a review on it later, so you can decide if you want to try it, too.

I HAVE NO INTENTION OF ADVERTISING A COMMERCIAL PRODUCT HERE, I DON'T HAVE ANY INTEREST IN IT, I JUST WANTED TO SHARE THIS OPTION WITH THE FORUM!

All the best
