PPL and CPL

A place for 'real world' pilots and aviation enthusiasts to discuss their hobby

My wonderful grandmother is taking me to NZAR on Saturday Morning, where I'll (hopefully) get some information!

Back from Ardmore, got information from a nice bloke called Adam. My cousin was out on a Cross Country, and I saw Trolly's name on a board for 1st Solo, Congrats!
So, I got advice to check out a course in Matamata, and also that a Trial Flight would be a great start. The question now is "Do I want Flying to be a hobby, and music to be my career, or the opposite?". I'm seriously thinking hard about that one.

Out of interest, what instrument(s) do you play?

Isn't it evident?? Boeing are my favourite aircraft.

P.S. that's is my real birthday but I wish to keep my real age secret to keep you all pondering.

Piano, Organ, Trumpet (Bb, C, Eb, PiccoloTrumpet, Cornet, Flugel, Bugle etc.), Tenor Horn, Baritone Horn, Guitar, Double Bass, Bass Guitar, Percussion, Synthesizer (can program to a certain extent), and probably more. I tend to play whatever I can get access to, but I've never tried Woodwinds.

Wow. I do play piano myself (jazz), and it's only a hobby for me, but I think with that extensive knowledge you have you should stick with the music for career.

Good on you smile.gif

Thanks Dan, but I'm thinking if I get PPL, CPL, and Instrument rating I can get a student loan for it, which would be good. But then again, depending on when I start, I could do that, and then take out another loan for a BMus...
Or perhaps I could do Aviation, and play in shows and things like I am ATM...
Ah, choices, choices.

Cheers, and congrats to ZKTOM too!

The Walsh Memorial Flying School held annually in Matamata would be a great place to start as Adam has said. I was advised my many people to go there, although couldn't afford it at the time. Lots of my other mates and NZFF'ers have also attended. Check out the website here: www.flyingskool.co.nz

As for picking between a hobby and career, why not go do an intro flight with AFS. They basically do an 'effects of controls' lesson with you, which will let you have a real feel for being in control of an aeroplane. If you're not hooked straight away, then I'd suggest go for the music winkyy.gif

Aye, Cheers Trolly. How much does it cost, and would it be legal for my cousin to give me control for a little while instead of shelling out for an intro flight?

Can't remember the exact price, but its around $100 or $150 for a full hour. If you ring 0800 ARDMORE they will be able to tell you.

And nope, that would be against the CAA rules unless your cuz is a C cat instructor.

Heh, I'll ring him up and see if he's got his C Cat yet....

Cheers. I'll ring up AFS and find out. Could be a good B'day present

Hi guys.

Have a quick question. How do I keep calm during my NZCAA test flight? I get so nervous, then my thoughts go blank, even when I've prepared well.

Perhaps unrelated to the flying component, but I have this herbal thing I take before important school tests, interviews etc. It certainly does work! Few drops on the tongue 15 minutes before and works a charm!

some butterfly's in the stomach are often better than none at all, it will keep you on your toes, theres no point in me saying "just relax, its just another flight" because no matter how hard you try you wont be able to trick your mind into thinking that your relaxed. i know its not a good attitude but i always think "if i try my best and it works out then GREAT but if i try my best and something goes pear shaped then whats happened has happened, moral of the story is just try your best and if something doesn't go right then move on, dont let it snowball and stuff the rest of your flight up biggrin.gif
