PPL and CPL

A place for 'real world' pilots and aviation enthusiasts to discuss their hobby

Congrats man, that must be an excellent feeling!!

Anyways. Im starting my PPL this weekend, im pretty excited. Before I start though, im still tossing up between aircraft.

The club im looking at has both the Cirrus SR-20, which I really like, and the Cessna 172 which is also fantastic (Not the Garmin one BTW)

Anyway, the price is negligible, so thats not really a factor - but which one do you think you guys would prefer? Ive read that the SR-20 is much faster, and handles much like the bigger/faster aircraft I will fly when gaining my CPL, so its probably good for that. Though, some people say you should learn basic training in the old school panel, not the brand new Glass Cockpit ones. Sounds a bit funny to me, just some old guys that love the classics, but do you think there is any real advantage of this?

Do some time in both, C172s are easy to fly not sure about the SR20.. but glass cockpits are a novelty for doing cross countries tongue.gif

Guys, I found a new school, Adventure Aviation NZ, http://adventureaviation.co.nz/home/ Check it out! Seems like the head instructors very very experienced, Cp. Phil Hooker

Anyone from this school has nice/not so nice things to say about this school?

The SR20 would be harder to do your PPL in, its a lot more of an advanced aircraft, perhaps better suited to the oz CPL. I've only flown the SR22 which is a real hot potato and I dont think would be any good for PPL training, I've only been for a ride in a SR20 which was a bit slower but still quite quick and a lot more complex than the 172. I would deffinately reccomend the 172 for PPL, as I would bet they usually use at this school.

What kind of school do you want ?? What do you want out of your training ?? There are many many places to do your training, too many to list here. If you want student loan then you can only really stick to the big sausage factories.

I just want a school that is worth the money we are investing, in terms of quality of instruction, minimal delays & a school that just plain cares about its students. There are 3 on my final list before I make a decision.

Nelson Aviation College, Motueka
Adventure Aviation Bay Flight International, Tauranga
Mainland Air Aviation College, Dunedin

Guys who have any inside info abt these 3 schools, feel free to post. It would help me alot. Thanks.

Hiya.

Actually trying for both. If I can't get a loan approved, then I'll have to pay for it me self.

I am currently a student at bay flight international, i was previously a student at ardmore flying school but only for my exam credits. What exactly do you want to know? just a general sort of overview? im having a great time at bay flight and really enjoy it there so my views will be pretty slanted towards it

Hi Goose! Yeah, a an overview of Bay Flight would be good. Any delays, quality of instructors who go the extra mile, weather, students to FI ratios etc.... Have you flown with C.Hooker? Thx yah!

i can help with nav,,

* you WILL get a question on time zones etc also chart scale like what is 23cm on a 1:250,000 chart e.t.c so make sure you understand the formulas,
*draw lots of pictures for every question you can
*keep in mind theres a strong possibility you want get all the charts that are required however the stuff that you would need from the chart missing will be in the flight plan already - so dont stress for minutes over were the rest of the chart is!!

cant think of anything else major now that alot of people get caught up on but will let you know if i think of anything, best of luck
