Surely the ILS system is designed so that the pilot can land the plane safely with no visual reference? I find ILS more fun to sim than normal visuals.

I prefer visual appoaches, knowing there is a chance I could screw it up. Then if I pull off a good landing, it makes me feel like a pro

In real life, when there is good weather, I often here 'heavy' pilots over the scanner requesting visual appoaches into NZAA. I'm guessing a bit of hands on flying is more fun that computer controlled flight.

Nah I was meaning manually flying it in but with the guidance of the ILS. Therefore in the event of emergency quick action can be taken.

and full catIII starts either later this year or early next.

I heard that, is that because of international flights having nowhere to go if all the suitable airports are fogged out...? also to what level of cat III ?? and why only 23L ?? sorry for all the qs

only 1 runway due cost and complexity

With some category III systems, (and with certain aircraft), you can perform an autolanding, with all category I and II systems there are minima, on or before which you need to have a reference to the ground (or rwy in sight?) before landing.
