"Colourful" might be a charitable description of the feller!
Maltese Cross?

Charl, I really don't know very far, but as far as I do, the Knights Hospitaller of St John were a Maltese Order (when the Crusades were on), and the St John's Ambulance is known here as the Zambucks. That might be the connection.
I will see what I can find in cyberspace.

The Order of Saint John, formally the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem is an international order of chivalry which is headquartered in the United Kingdom. The Order founded the St John Ambulance associations and oversees their work. They also own the rights to the St John name and brand, including the Maltese Cross logo.

I would guess the intrepid doctor painted whatever seemed appropriate on the plane!
Earlier there appears to be a Red Cross.
No matter: if you arrive in a remote place, treat someone trampled by a buffalo, then shoot said beast before departure, then you are fair dinkum.

Now there's a blast from the past.

As a nipper growing up in the Territory during the '50s, Dr. Fenton's name (and exploits) were still the stuff of legends.

Thanks for the link Mike.
