USN Neptune departing Whenuapai with JATO assist ...


Probably the most beautiful prop aircraft ever made ...in my humble opinion.
This old lady transported the, then Vice President of the U.S , Nixon to NZ in 1953....seen here at Ohakea



1966, and a USAF F-4 starting up at Auckland airport. The occasion, unknown, but going by what appears to be a tv camera in the background, it may have been indeed an occasion.

Yes it is the opening of Auckland airport. My Dad flew into the opening show in an aero club aircraft.
He has plenty of photos from that show and others air shows from the 50s onwards

Aharon , thanks for looking. Not all Neptunes were fitted with skis.
The one in the photo is from the US Navy squadron VXE-6, who operated the type for operation deep freeze. They flew to and from the Antarctic from NZCH and other NZ locations.
I think the photo shows a demo, I can't think of any reason for a Neptune to depart Whenuapai using JATO.

I remember the Neptunes flying out of Invercargill to the Ice in the early 60s,Jato bottles ablaze.What was their payload?

HARS has a couple of Neptunes, but I don't remember seeing one with JATO gear. If there's any still around, they'll find it

I'm trying to get my old man to scan everything, which he is but it's taking time to do thousands of slides.... but that glorious Kodachrome colour!
