I am with Slingshot at the moemnt but our broadband has really slowed down (1 1/2 - 2 hours for a 45mb file!) thus webpages are slow etc.
Is anybody else having this issue with other various isp's?

No problems here. Slingshot over the last couple of days has been no different than any other day (i.e. pretty good).

Edit: If you are concerned, it may pay to call their helpline and see if they have any problems/maintenance in your area etc. :wink2:

With Slingshot it really varies based on the alignment of the planets.

I'm with Slingshot and I have good days and bad days, most mostly good days.

Slingshot has terrible international throughput (AsiaNetCom I think with terrible latency and slow speeds) though, and many are inclined to think they use more network throttling and management than the other ISPs.

It's extremely likely youve gone over your data cap - on the current plans (at last check, which was ages ago) the highest data limit with Slingshot was 6 gigs. Ring them up and see - the data blocks are pretty well priced.

Ours is also 25 gigs. Those plans (I actually wrote planes, but corrected it there :lol: plane on the brain :plane: ) were awesomely wicked before they changed to 6 gig caps.

Also remember that DSL inherently has issues (it's not the best tech ever invented) occasionally that often sort themselves out. Calls to helpdesks usually fix what can't fix itself.

Our internet has sped up (I think).

We signed up for 1GB per month which went up to 3GB which then moved to 5Gb and with in one week that number had squared itself and now (according to slingshot) we have a massive 25GB (My friend has a similar plan with Telstra - 25GB - and he's gone over the limit 4 or 5 times

I cannot think why Tele$cum are doing traffic shaping on Go-large ;)

Speaking as an ex Telecom employee who was heavily involved in the broadband area, the reason for shaping (and the intention was to shape only for peer to peer traffic such as torrents and only on peak hours) was to maintain the integrity of the network, the problem with broadband over copper is that the network cannot handle more tha a certain volume of traffic before you put some alarming weights on the infrastructure. The issue was even more compounded by the government allowing competitors who dont want to invest in infrastructure in this country to use Telecoms network to deliver thier services as well, the result is what you see now and it will only get worse (slower and slower internet and more maintenance of the copper network required without the funding to do it which will/has driven up the costs of monthly line rentals).

Telecom must be jumping over the moon now that the network portion of the business has been/will be split off from the rest of the country as I believe no one in any power in Telecom has any idea of how they are meant to keep the POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) running.

In short you think internet is slow now just wait a year or two then you will really see some problems.

Incedentally the Go Large plan was taken off the market as the company hired to provide shaping for Telecom couldent live up to what they said they could do so now Telecom has bought the shaping in-house so you will see a new itteration of Go Large very soon.

I agree with you fundamentally, although I don't particularly like either Telecom or traffic shaping.

Absolutely LLU was not a good thing for the internet in NZ. - a quick fix to a problem that won't go away.
Slingshot and everyone else whinging to the GOVT about LLU and then getting are just overgrown children, with bees in their bonnets, who can't invest in their own network but think it's acceptable to bludge off of someone elses.

But that's something I'll save for a geek forum, not here.

On the subject of broadband, im trying to install Xnet broadband on a DSL-504G modem and not having much luck at all

Ring the helpdesk! It will be the easiest and best course of action.

From memory when we went to Slingshot from Xtra on the same modem, all you need to do is put in your new username and password under the username and password settings on the modem's we control panel (10.1.1.1, admin/admin).
Probably something like blabzillaweasel @ xnet.co.nz and your password is whatever you had it set as by Xnet.

Also, broadband can take a while to churn and provision, etc. so this could be the cause here.
The helpdesk will be able to tell you whether your CX is still in this stage.

Also at some stage when you get all this sorted out and have a while to use Xnet, would you mind telling me what you think of them and their service?

Sure!, i already know their helpdesk service is a bit slack its machine for 2 button presses then it tries re-directing you witch seems to be infinitely just telling you "if you are having any phone problems try unplugging your modem then plugging it back in"
