Oh yer mine's had one foot in the grave for about six months. I haven't tried it since, but I think it's well and truly dead.
MS have a reputation for excellent hardware, so perhaps TradeMe is the best route (if you're ok with going for something second hand).

I wouldn't either. In theory, it's a nice idea, but in practice it begins to show it's crappyness.
USB > Gameport anyhow. USB is a better spec in many ways, and it's newer. I also don't believe I've seen a computer recently that still had a gameport.
USB is the de-facto standard, so I wouldn't bother with GP or adaptors.
