I would like a bit of advice on dual core CPUs.

I'm looking at the possibility at getting a new PC tailored to FS9. I understand FS is pretty intensive on CPUs and having a look around, everything seems to have dual core CPUs. I once read that FS9 doesn't get the best out of a dual core CPU as it only knows how to access one. I don't know how accurate that was but I'd like to hear some opinion on the subject before the bank account gets damaged.

Any advice is appreciated.

FS9 was only meant to run on a single core.FSX with the SP1 update is supposed to have addressed the 2core issue,users reporting varying amounts of success with it.I use an E6400 2core Duo and after installing SP1 I got a noticeable increase in frame rates.I would suggest that you get the biggest2core Duo that you can,match that up with the best graphics that you can afford and 2 GB of memory and then start tweaking FSX for Quality

Agree 100% with that conclusion.
My FS9 install is brilliant on the upgraded box (core2 Duo 6600) with 8800GTX video.
And it's ready to run FSX, when DX10 emerges one day....

i have only fs9 now and my little 3.0ghz single core with hyper tread has much the same as the duel when ive matched it to those with duel core
2gig ram and a good card with a semi good cpu will do a good job with fs9 ...
.fsx well put in all the top stuff on the market now like charl has and you have a good chance of keeping up with all the goodies in the future

I have an x6800 cpu and fs9 uses all of one core and then moves on to the second one. No problems at all.
BUT

I had a x2 raedon cpu that would not use the second core. When it used all the first core it just gave up and dumped me to desktop

i didnt think fs9 and fsx use duel core ,? not compat, or is that just fs9 ?ok yeah just read above again and seen what was said ,i dont know how long it will take me before i go duel core it seems all the rage at them moment ,,

I think FSX can use dual cores if you've upgraded it to SP1, but otherwise no.

I have a AMD dual 4600. Prior to SP1 one core's useage would be at 100% and the other core would be picking up odd tasks (as monitored in Task Manager). After SP1 was installed both cores are pretty-well balanced at 90-100% total (mainly 100%). A friend is running a dual 6000 (lucky b.....) and he averages round 80-85 % balanced so this would indicate that FSX needs most of my 4600 to run and there is spare CPU usage on anything over a 4600.
