My friend is thinking about upgrading ram on his computer. He has a HP Pavilion a1240a

HP

On the website it says the computer can only support DDR2 400 models, but the motherboard specs say it can support either DDR2 400 or DDR2 533

Motherboard specs

My cousin from America is coming over for a holiday in a few weeks and he asked me if I wanted him to bring anything from over there. Since ram is really cheap over there I asked if he can bring the ram for my friend, (and 2gigs for me ;) you can get 2 gigs for U.S.$140 there :drool: ) Since the ram is going to come from America, I need to make sure it is compatible, and DDR2 400 is harder to find than DDR2 533, so I was thinking of ordering a DDR2 533 stick. My question is, should the 533 stick be able to run in my friend's computer?(even if it only runs at DDR2 400?)
I'm not too sure about it because the HP website only says it supports DDR2 400 and not 533 (I'm not worried about it having to run at 400 speed just as long as it runs, he won't notice a difference ;) )

as far as I know the most important thing would be the DDR or DDR2 part, they are actul differant sizes and stuff.

well it says:

    *  Four 240-pin DDR2 DIMM sockets
    * Supports PC2 3200 (400 MHz) and PC2 4200 (533 MHz) DDR2-DIMMS
    * Maximum HP/Compaq approved memory is 4 GB*

So it says it supports 533mhz and 400mhz and on the other site it says that it supports "PC2-3200 MB/sec" but doesn't say it doesn't support the other.. So I would imagine it would work..

I would sugest you email HP and ask, it is quite a bit of money to spend when your not entirly sure.
