As you know, my computer is a super machine as itself The monitor, however, is not. It is a tired old 1997 Dell 17" bubble screen, that makes lots of noises when you put it on the highest refresh rate, and it is slightly fuzzy. I dont like this, because it seems to hurt my head, and my eyes, and I was strictly warned by the computer shop that this could cause me to "stuff my eyes". I say fair enough. Problem is, I dont want to go out spending hundreds on some fancy LCD. I just want something that will last atleast a couple of years, and will stop with the dam headaches!

So I was searching Trademe, and I found this

It used to cost 1300$ when it was new, and it also has a Sony Trinitron tube. Also 21" , and 1600x1200 resolution
It also has a price to match, and it in Hamilton which I can easily pick up, and save on the hefty postage costs

Oppinions?

I have seen nothing but good reviews about this monitor on the internet, and by the questions I asked, its all in good condition

Looks ok to me . I've got a decent 17" (I think) flat screen CRT monitor here if someone wants to come and pick it up, the computer itself (now nearly 7 years old) died about a month ago. Otherwise it'll end up in the trash probably.

When I decided to replace my old 17", I went looking for a good CRT, but the main problem I had was the phony advertised sizes -- it would pay to ask what the actual visible screen size is. The 21" CRT monitors I looked at were all smaller than 19" LCDs.

yes, exactly why the 15" screen on my dads laptop=my 17" CRT.

If anyone has a 21"CRT, could you please measure its depth, as my space is limited. Id say it should fit, but just want to make sure

looks nice brownbox, I once used a 19" lcd monitor and it was amazing in comparison the the 17inch.. So much more space to use

IMO CRTs are better than LCDs.. that one you looking at on tradme looks good, not to expensive..

Couldnt agree more! CRT's have more vibrant colours, they have a higher quality picture, and LCDs seem to get blurry when things start moving really fast, especially in games

I couldn't disagree more, in my opinion LCD technology is now at a stage where CRT's are redundant, a relic of computer history consigned to a grave along side the 5 1/4" floppy and the 386
I've been using a 17" Samsung LCD for my games for the past 2 1/2 years, and it has performed flawlessly. Modern LCDs do not suffer from ghosting, are less expensive new compared to their CRT counterparts and have more than adequate colour reproduction. They won't pump radiation into you and you'll have more room on your desk for your joystick.
In fact, I'm so used to LCDs that I get nauseous from the flickering if I use a CRT for more than half an hour.

but if you're really trying to pinch pennies to tide you over until you get a new PC, then a CRT from trademe will have to do. I hope you've been to the gym recently to lift a 21in CRT

By the way, I brought it. I figured, hey, its only 65$. The reviews say its good. He says its good. The answers to the questions said it was good. And the price was right.

I find that I get an extremely sore head from using a monitor on anything below 85 htz.

Ohhh man, if this guy is fast at answering the email, I could have my new monitor by tomorrow! Cant wait!

I got an awesome Dell ex-office 17inch CRT from a electronics depo in Auckland for $60- best $60 I ever spent!

CRT's are heaps better than LCD's in my opinion. FS looks worse on our family PC with a flat screen, and if you move your eyes a little too high/low, they colours start to look inverted!

you managed to point out the only two flaws of the LCD must have been an old LCD- modern LCDs have 160 degree viewing angles and excellent colour production. I would never go back to CRT, the benefit of extra desk space alone is worth it.

Not to mentioin how much you pay for them....

In reality, brownbox, LCD's are now cheaper than CRTs:
on pricespy the cheapest 17" LCD is $265, whereas the cheapest 19" CRT (i.e. with a 17" viewable area) is $308

so they are! I stand corrected... B)

My main monitor is LCD, and I have an old CRT as a second monitor.
There is a startling difference between what you see on the two.
LCD's don't do pure blacks, while CRT can give you essentially pitch black.
But an LCD gives a subtlety of shading that doesn't exist in the CRT world.
Trust me, when you make the switch you'd swear you have new improved software, and a new computer too.
And if you spring for a biggish widescreen one, you'll be wearing a large smile for a week

alright, I picked it up today. My, its very nice. 1600x1200 @100hz suites me fine
The banner at the top of the page, now only takes up half the width!

All my games run flawlessly, even after being switched to 1600x1200 with 4xaa, except need for speed carbon, which even then is playable. FS looks superb, and I dont have that stupid jagged fuzzy edge thing like I had before
