My PC, like me, is getting a bit long in the tooth but would it run P3D, and if so which version should I look for.?

Hi ya Pat, I was lucky to be gifted P3DV3 academic from Greg and Marty , all you need, it will change your frame rate UP by .. well depending on your Graphic's card .. Its huge , I still fly around in FSX to check things and build on .. the difference , what shocked me was over photo real Christchurch ! in P3DV3 its a huge WOW!

Looking at those Spec's Pat , you would be cooking , the graphics card will balance with your higher processor .. You will notice a huge change in it being smoother.

Thanks Ian. I am trying to decide whether to stay with FSX Steam or look at P3D. I read that most of the addon scenery that runs in FSX will also run in P3D.

Would you suggest that I look at P3DV3 Academic if I go down that track then.?

All FSX scenery simply just fall's into place with out little or no effort , I now would Recommend P3DV3 without any hesitation, I would not go to steam .. the change is very dramatic.

After clearing out FSX I guess I wouldn't have to worry about P3D trying to install in the usual MS Games Folder, so that would save a bit of worry. I will do a bit more research on P3D. There is quite a bit on the net but it is always good to hear from someone using the program.

A good plan is to save you 'Addon scenery' on your desktop for a start just to up and running for a start if you decide to change.

As I am starting from scratch again the only addon scenery I had installed on FSX Steam was the RealNZ scenery which I can reinstall easily.

If your PC is running FSX, then you should be more than pleased with P3D. I swung over to P3D a few weeks back and gained about 10 fps, even with the sliders further to the right, and traffic turned on. Cost for academic version was $69.
Most aircraft will work, although some payware FSX aircraft we have (such as the A2A Harvard) are not compatible unfortunately. You do need the P3D versions.

Thanks for your comments. I wondered about aircraft. I guess that $69 is US so I hope the exchange rate is good at present.

The US price is $59.95, but Lockheed Martin do collect GST... So don't expect much change from $100. Still, this is better than that Pro version, which will set you back NZ$320.
Or for the lotto winners out there, there's the Pro Plus, which is NZ$3700...
Hence my recommendation that you go for the academic!

I was quite STUNNED at the performance of P3DV3 .. I'm pleased my transition is in the mid 3 , 3.4 to be exact , even the default is quite shattering when you first see ... my first thing I did install was photo real Christchurch ! it really was COOKING !

Yes sorry US$69 including tax worked out to be about NZ$99
