Active Sky2016 for FSX

Postby Barrington » Tue Jul 26, 2016 11:55 am

Would anyone know if Active Sky automatically overrides the FSX settings or do you set the sim to 'real world weather' or 'user defined weather'?
I have tried to register on their support website numerous times without success so thought I would put this out there in case anyone can help!
Thanks

I'm yet to re-install AS, It generally overrides FSX weather least tidy's it up but one thing pointed out is with the few whether stations around New Zealand you cant get the close to real as what you see out the window in areas, Christchurch for example will not create the same sky and cloud features as we get during a North-West wind or style whether.

I'm not entirely sure, as I don't use FSX now, but I would have thought that it works the same as Prepar3d -- it installs its own weather 'theme', and selects it by default. When you install AS16, the installer will then run another installer which sets up the sim to receive weather. Did this happen?
I was surprised how easy it was to get ASN, and then AS16, up and running, it is a very clever system which does all the work for you.

Is AS2016 that much of an improvement over ASN?

Yes, but I can't really quantify it. I liked ASN, but I love AS16:)

I'm gonna ask you to quantify it anyway; you just think it looks better?
Or easy to drive?

I just want the real-life weather as much as possible; I don't do 'themes' or historical playback, or anything like that.
Lack of METAR for NZ is certainly frustrating though...

The thing I like most is that it is more likely to give a different weather than the same old thing day after day, which was an issue with REX when they did real weather. The weather appears more complex, with multiple layers, but I don't really know how well that relates to the actual weather at any one time -- hard to test at the moment, since it's such a boringly fine winter here so far....

I just installed it and didn't do anything else except turn off the annoying startup sound. Now it runs all the time, tucked away on the system tray, and the only time is causes issues is if I run FSX, since it isn't installed in FSX, so it will complain and remove all the FSX weather. However I don't do that often enough for it to be a nuisance.

AS16 is the first weather tool to ever give me solid overcast, when you get to see a fairly level top of a cloud cover which goes on forever. Currently pretty much that in Wellington, by the looks of it. So as you rise up through the clouds, you don't lose that sense of immersion by shifting into 'fluffy' mode.

One off the funny things and I have mentioned this before ... as I cloud glaze, people walk past and ask me what the hell I am looking at ...

Thanks Rob. I run P3Dv3 though I haven't used the sim much at all for a couple of months.
However, I am currently medically grounded by CAA IRL for 3 months due to recent laser eye surgery, so maybe it will get more use for a while.
I just bought PrecipitFX, but have yet to try it out.
Thanks for the additional detail; the solid o/c is appealing. I run ASN right now, so the upgrade version is lower cost for me.
Perhaps when we slide into the next month and all bills are paid there will be some left over to grab it. (not holding my breath though)
Cheers
