Hi all,
I am very happy with FS2004. I fly with 2D panels. I've been thinking of giving VC flying a serious 'go'. Can anyone direct me to a primer on this, or general intro? For instance do I need to get Track IR or something like that to use it effectively? Is there a way to change views? At the moment I get one view and move within the view using only the hat control on my joystick. Simple questions like that. Thx for any info.

Back in the loop KComm for a VC, for an intro if your still using FS9/2004 , my recommendation would be a Milton Shupe Dash7 for example - the team has done plenty of other great aircraft , the most recent the Ventura , this will get you started http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/loca...age=3&pp=20 , course has a NZ 1980s Newman's paint in further search's .

Try F1 View. Its a simple and free program. You will need a mouse with a scroll wheel (don't they all have that now?). Press and hold the designated mouse button and move your view around and zoom in and out with the wheel. It will become one of your favourite programs. I have TrackIR 5 but rarely use it. I dont like having to wear the thing on my head for starters (should at least be bluetooth by now as well) as well as the exaggerated head movements required. You will find reading the gauges more difficult in the VC and having to move to some odd angles will be required to activate switcheson overhead panels etc and you may not be able to read the switch labels clearly. Good aircraft to look for are those that have pop up mini panels. These are great and can be undocked and used on a second monitor.

I too have recently made the switch from 2d to 3d (After what? 16yrs in the seat) and it definitely does improve things. Not sure what you mean by one view tho? you should have full 360 motion and be able to hold the view when you release the hat. Definitely try cowpatz suggestion of F1 view and maybe later down the track EzDok (payware about US$35))

oh wow that FI view is amazing, just what I needed to get going. Thanks everyone. I just tried it with a Zinertek VC addon for the LevelD767 (which prompted the initial enquiry about VCs) and boy does it look great! That FI 'hold the mouse wheel and move around' is invaluable. I also use the IFLy 737 and Flight 1 ATR and I'm confident that they will look great too. So thanks again.

I doubt I will ever fly with TrackIR again, unless I am forced to

Is it really that bad? I wanted to use it for airliners mainly. One thing that concerned me is that I would be facing upwards, while looking down at the screen when using Overhead panels etc

It works very well with the iFly 737. Use Shift + Enter to raise your eye height and Shift + Backspace to lower it. Using the mouse wheel you can move in and out. You can use this method to set up a really nice landing position so that you get a good view of the flight instruments and can just see the LH Engine instruments on the EICAS screen as well as a good view of the runway. I mainly use the 2D panels for setting everything up and the takeoff etc and maybe the VC in a bit of the cruise. 2D for the descent and then switch to the VC view I described earlier for the final approach and landing.
You will find that manipulating things like the FMC and even various autopilots are better with pop ups or 2D panels.

TrackIR is awesome, a little pricey especially the active version with the transmitter and receiver getup, but worth the extra $$$. I'm only a recent convert to VC as well after being a die-hard 2D fan but TrackIR has made that transition much easier.
I mainly fly airliners but TrackIR is amazingly cool in GA, gliders, anything low-and-slow or with a decent cockpit view.

So good as it is, 'I can personally say it puts my head in a spin' , not just for FS , so many other gaming programs, going back to FS supremely ideal for Helicopters.

On that note. Is anyone willing to let go of their TrackIR? ive had the 4 for years now but wondered how good the 5 was.

I must admit that I have a great affection for 2D Panels... biggrin.gif ...!

It might not be "realistic"...but...

(a) It enables me to view the whole of the Instrument Panel in great detail without scrolling around.
(b) It enables me to modify the Instrument Panel layout to my own liking, with the aid of my "FS Panel Studio".

My "flights" are mostly for scenery exploration only, often with very little regard for aircraft accuracy.... winkyy.gif ...!

So 2D suits me nicely!... smile.gif ...!

Paul....in glorious 2D.... rolleyes.gif ...!

About ten years back, I bought Track IR, and a thing with a name like 'Voice Buddy' and headphones to work with it, and some clever electronic glasses which provided a 3D view.
I liked TIR, but at that time there were not many good VCs around, although there are lots now. It was great for judging the turning points in a circuit, but it was very easy to become disorientated because there was no peripheral vision - and letting go with a big sneeze on short final could wreak all sorts of havoc.
The voice thing was good, but it was just too much trouble to teach it to understand my accent. It was a very good headset, but when combined with the pointy hat and the glasses it made me feel such an idiot that I soon abandoned them.
As for the glasses, they did provide 3D but only in every second line on the screen. After much hunting around the 'Net, I found that they relied on a function which was available in Nvidia cards, but not in Radeons, which I have always used. They could have mentioned that in their sales blurb.

My ideal now is either a Quintuple Head-to-Go, or maybe two Triple Heads-to-Go, when I can afford a machine to run them. Perfection would be one of those flexible plastic screens, about 12 x 2m, which I could wrap around to get peripheral vision, which would let me see just when I "get into the saucer" , which is when you start the flare.

That is probably it in a nutshell. Track IR is good for viewing outside but not really that flash inside...too much craning of the neck.
