SP, I wouldn't - if what you do creates new fragments, it will be a never-ending story.

What are you using as a defragger? I use the free one from http://www.auslogics.com/en/software/disk-defrag/
The first run on a badly fragged disk can take a while, since it depends on the amount of free space available for shuffling the pieces and putting them together again into complete files, but once that is done, a regular defrag only takes a couple of minutes at the most.
If yours is taking all night, I would say something is wrong.

Mention: these are seperate HDs , not partitioned.

Ouch - two years is a loooong time.
That said, some years ago I tried the then-new Ultimate Defrag, to see if it did anything better than the Auslogics one I had been using.
It got hopelessly bogged down and I cancelled the run. I suspect it got confused when it tried to move the system files to the quickest part of the drive, when they were already there. I can't prove that, but I have stayed with auslogics since then.
I defrag my FS drives before each sim session, and the backup ones when I remember. I have found that Win7 creates much more fragmentation than XP did . (and FSX seems to be more sensitive to fragmentation too, but that might be a chicken-and-egg thing)

Sounds like you've decided to stay with XP a bit longer.
I use Defraggler, it's free and it can do individual files so there's no excuse for leaving things for 2 yrs, shame on you wub.gif
