Stereo Speakers

I've been wondering would it be possible to somehow hook up my big stero speakers into my computer to give me surround sound?

They don't have connection like my PC speakers do that would fit in my soundcard- only thin wirey things, so perhaps I need a converter- if so, what would would this be?

Its probably possible, easier if you get an amp (with power-amp would be awesome) and plug the speakers into that, then get a 3.5mm plug into RCA adaptor and plug that into the amp, and select the source.
