FSX Reinstall Windows 7

The place to ask for help or solve each others technical issues and discuss hardware

Postby Redda03 » Wed Apr 02, 2014 12:02 pm

I recently upgraded to Windows 7 64 Bit from XP and I completed a clean install of FSX (Deluxe Edition).... SP1 installed ok but I could not install SP2...I note the following notice from Microsoft regarding SP2 so assume that SP2 could not be the cause for the problems I am having with aircraft installs as discussed below.

"Microsoft released another service pack for Flight Simulator X about the same time as its expansion pack (below). The update is primarily for Vista users that have DirectX 10 (DX10) compatible graphics adapters."

Before the Win 7 install I saved a complete XP FSX folder with all the addons (Scenery/aircraft) on to an External Drive with the idea of copying/pasting them to my Win 7 FSX install.
I have added two Scenery Addons (Fly Tampa Hong Kong and PAC Rarotonga) with no apparent hitches and plan to complete fresh reinstalls of all of my ORBx Oceania scenery downloads ....Aust and NZ.

I have also attempted to transfer a couple of my default XP FSX aircraft onto my new Win 7 FSX...the C-208B and the B 737-800, both with numerous paints that I had installed over the past few years. In both cases when I load either of these aircraft onto Win 7 FSX only one paint shows on the "Select Aircraft" window. There appears to be no apparent error in aircraft.cfg's and all the appropriate texture folders appear in each Aircraft Folder. And, in the case of the B737 the one paint now available to fly has no sound!!
I have loaded three other XP FSX addon aircraft and again only one "paint" is available to fly. Other than this the aircraft operates normally!!

I have been searching the web high and low for assistance without much success and I am now wondering if the change to Win 7 has been the right decision!!.... have been in the FlightSim game for a number of years now and have never had any previous problems with OS upgrades and reinstalls of the then current Microsoft Flight Simulation version.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!!

Cheers,

Have you ticked the "show all variations" box at the foot of the aircraft page?

From memory, there is a button on the aircraft selection screen which says something like 'show all variations'.

Oops, too late:)

Also, you really need SP2 installed. What error did you get?

"Microsoft Flight Simulator X Service Pack 2 Setup ended before completing installation.
Your System has not been modified. To install this program at a later time, please run Setup again"

Hmmm... if it was me I'd be removing everything and starting again. Are you sure SP2 isn't installed? Did you check in Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall Programs to see if it is listed? Perhaps you already installed it without realising?

You really need SP2 as it brought with it some much needed performance increases. I also think most payware requires it or you'll run into problems.

I have uninstalled/reinstalled FSX THREE times over the last few days. The second reinstall was loaded on to a new link after a Flight Sim online search for possible solutions..... C:/Flight Simulator X. FSX now sits on the C:/Program Files (86)....link.

I have previously checked to ensure that the SP1 is installed. FYI I also disabled UAC for one new attempt at installing SP2 without any success.

Bob,

I know that this is one of the simpler issues but have you tried installing as Administrator in the selection dropdown menu? I had this with a piece of software and it solved it for me.

Best of luck

Maybe there is some indication as to why it failed in the Windows event log?

Hi Bob,
Sorry for not being clear, if you do a right click on the service pack 2 installer Icon and then choose "Run as Administrator"

Hope this helps

All I get when I right click is a "Window Box" with a list of 15 options starting with Install, Repair, Uninstall...................................................??

After a further FSX uninstall (#4).... using the CD for first time, I was able to successfully reinstall FSX and then install both SP1 and SP2 without any problems.

Many thanks for your help over the last few days!!

Hi Bob,

Pleased you have finally got it installed, yes you were right with the icon not having run as Administrator on the drop down.
I hadn't been able to check before adding the comment but now I see I was wrong. I think it must be something to do with it being an msi file rather than exe.

Sorry again for sending false hope.
Regards
