I think I need new RAM

The place to ask for help or solve each others technical issues and discuss hardware

Well some of you know the last week iv been having terrible pc problems, mostly just more "random lockups" as well as bad performace stuters and over unstability of the system and programs.

Iv been narrowing it down alot, mamnaged to get a lock up with out any USB devices so that is ruled out now. I get a gauranteed lock up whenever I run the avast scanner, its not related to avast thow as I had the lockups well well before installing avast. Really it all leads to the RAM.

I have one RAM module:

RAM: Silicon Power 1GB DDR-400 PC3200 Memory

Mobo: Asus P5PE-VM Intel 865G LGA775 All In One Motherboard

Are these two incompatible? I have been wanting to buy some new RAM since I did my upgrade, I still have a few weeks of saving to buy that excatly the same RAM module again so as to have 2gbs then (my motherboards limit). But the thing is now the RAM is the most liely cause of my problems, so will I end up buying buying new RAM and still only have 1gb..

So would it be unwise to buy that same RAM brand? The RAM I have is only a around 5 mounths old. Will putting in anothor RAM module, same speed buy differant brand possibly make my system stable and run well again whilst still having the old module in?

mmm what should jimmy do!

Thanks
James

firstup... go here and get memtest... put it on a floppy (or bootable CD) and run it... it will test your RAM in a 'clean' environment. If there are any problems, chances are they will show up as errors.

If it gets through all the tests clean, then it is most probably not your RAM causing issues but your CPU (overheating? check that heatsink/fan is seated properly) or there is something wrong with your mobo.

I assume you have tried the RAM in the other slot?

Very good advice there James. It's only a small download and it could save you from throwing away a good stick of memory

Same problem in eathier slot, all tempatures are fine, CPU never goes above 38degress.

Thanks for that link jared, iv run that for about 20minutes and got no errors but will leave for a couple of hours then leave it testing over night too.

Thanks

if it makes it through all those tests OK, then i would be about 99 percent sure it's not the RAM causing your problems.

Ran the test for ages, not one error.....

So, whats causing the lockups..

It is noteable that my RAM isn't on the list of RAM vendors that are okay with this board..

when I got my Asus board, Geil wasnt on the list of usable RAM brands, but mine worked fine.

Just occured to me now, all your symptoms sound a lot like mine did when i needed a power supply a while back. What size is your PSU and what brand is it?

Thats because mobo manufacturers cannot possibly test all 481734771234 brands of RAM! <_<

As for what is causing the lockup's... as it seems to be a little random it's going to be hard to track it down... I would guess PSU, Mobo, GPU or CPU (in that order)

Yup, and surprisingly it managed to go all night defraging with out locking up, I suppose thats cos theres alot less strain on the system during a defrag, I use "ultimate defrag" a payware program I got in the bundle deal for fsx pre order last year. And not to many programs.

I'll just save my pennys and get a nice 700W one. tongue.gif

Will I be able to sell my old one on that trademe or something? Then that would help towards the new RAM iv been saving for lately...

James

[EDIT]

P.S look post number 1,747, 767 not far away now. biggrin.gif
