Well, I got my cpu cooler off, and man was that a mission. Anyway, i got it off, cleaned it up, and then applied the best thin layer of thermal compound i have ever done. :D

So, I put the heatsink and fan back on the cpu, and tried to clip it back in. It wouldnt budge. I tried pushing it down again and the screwdriver slipped, smashing straight into the motherboard :o Thats when things started going real bad.

I thought, I will just clip it in, turn the computer on and that will be it. I clipped it in (no more slip ups), and turned on the pc. Nothing. Dead. I started to panic, then found out I hadnt turned the power switch on <_<

Ok, mistake number one. Nothing big

So i turned it on, it started, made the usual beep, went up to the screen for GigaRAID, found the hdds, as usual, then it shut off. By now, I was really panicking. I tried it again, and went into the BIOS, and found the CPU running at 90'C

I quickly unplugged the computer. Looked at the cooler again. Turned out, I didnt put one of the clips in and one whole side of the cooler was not touching the CPU at all. :o

In the end, after a sleepless night, I finally got it, and the CPU is now running a nice cosy 45 degrees (10 degrees drop). This will be the last time I muck around in the computer again for a while!

Cheers
BB

p.s. The heatsink was packed with dust, which I cleaned out.

id just leave that puter alone big time now ,the only things i do in mine are change the cards here and there ,all the rest i send to the shop, not because i dont know how ,,but for times like the screw driver going into my mother board or frying everything ,,
it would have been a real muck up telling your parents that after all the hassle of getting a new puter ,
cooling whats that? i dont look at the tempertures ,i dont want to know ,if i did id be adding fans worrying about nothing and maybe even ruining my own pc

my own pc runs all day everyday and up to 12hrs a day in fs, i turn it off maybe every two weeks ,guess what ? i only have cpu fan and graphic card one ,hhhhmmmm never had a problem even with overclocked card
my advice ,stop playing inside the puter and flightsim  >nzflag<

its so annoying when parts don't fit exactly- i'm always wary of applying too much pressure in case i break something. i haven't yet thankfully, but good to see you got the temperature down

That is bad very bad! The reason you PC shut off the first time is because the CPU was pretty much Fried. Even this short burst at 90c means you will probably have a mountain of trouble that no matter how many fans you install the problem is most likely Terminal.

Last week I cleaned out a total of 12 computers and not one of them did I remove the Heatsink on. Simply because one slip and that PC would be toast.

I am going to say this once only! It is very foolish to ignore any advice you have been given to not tamper which you have ignored. The adage that Trolly used of "If it aint broke dont fix it" applies to you pretty well. I cant believe that with all the fuss you have made on this forum to get this new PC your the main contributor to the Technical Section with problems your creating.

Edited phraseology

May i remind you that no one in the world would ever get anywhere if everyone just sat on their a*ses all day doing nothing. How else are you meant to learn?

advice is something you listen too but..
i think after buying a new computer and it working sweet ,better than you have had before you leave alone ,till you need to upgrade
its like buying a rolls royce trying to pull it apart put it back to gether and wondering why one day it rolls down one hill and can not get up the other ..
i do hope you have not done any damage to your puter ,and my advice is stick to changing ram and cards
when you buy a newer computer then pull that one apart and learn away ,you will have nothing to lose then ,until then you really are gambling with your fs world ..

Remember, its all about having fun.

I guess Im just the sort of person that seeks perfection in everything, and always has to muck around with something until i think its just right, even if it means breaking something along the way ;)

P.S. Its a hot summers day, and under heavy load for a few hours playing San Andreas, the CPU hasnt gone above 50 degrees. 51 at the most. The max temp for a pentium D is 69'C. After that it will slow down. then once past 90, it will shut off.

I have a P4 machine myself, and I had to take the heatsink off to give it a proper clean because it was hard to reach. Mind you, I had to reseat the CPU at the time because the computer stopped working.

I think it's good that brownbox has taken the time to maintain his computer. It's better that he asks advice than just doing it.

Yes I think a little maintenance once in a while is a good thing.
Every September I carry my computer out on the deck.
Then I turn the garden vac onto high pressure blow, stand 10 paces back, and let fly.
The box usually disappears in a brownish cloud for a bit, then come the cobwebs, and finally the spiders.
After I put it all back together again, I am so relieved it works, that I imagine it runs faster.
Hell those PC Company boxes were built tough, sad day when they went under.

I just picked myself up nearly chocking to death laughing. My flatmates thought I had really lost it after reading that.

Brillant idea Charl I never thought about doing it that way. Just wondering does a steam cleaner work any better <_<
