Hey all

Bought VLC a month or so ago and I am thinking about trying out some scenery packs for Europe (like GEX and UTX2). I bought and have tried Fscene and really didn't like it. It's all too green but perhaps I have lived in the UK too long! It definitely didn't gell well with VLC.

Is there any conflict with using RealNZ Wgtn and Marlborough/VLC and GEX and UTX2? Would like to have a much better Europe experience and not really touch NZ if possible.

Thanks in advance.

Jay

It should be fine, though i think GEX may install to the main texture folders which will change VLC look as it uses some default textures so making a back up of the main FSX scenery folder will be a good idea if you are wanting to try this right away with GEX ,other that that VLC doesnt effect the rest of the world and installing airports and other addons is fine ,if addons have switches exe make sure they are turned off before flying NZ again ,the UTX2 traffic addon is fine and doesnt have anything to do with VLC .
Timmo or Robin will be able fully answer your question in the morning which is about 7-9 hours from now so please make back up if you are going to install anything and just take my comments as a designer knowledge base and not fact as there could be something ive missed out ..

Cheers mate, appreciate your reply. We went out for lunch so just getting back to it and having a look.

So what you describe I believe that's what my Fscene install did. It installed global textures that just looked plain weird in NZ so not a great solution. The instructions for Fscene recommend you backup the world textures and I'm glad I did as it was just a matter of dropping them back in once I had seen the result.

I was thinking Ultimate Terrain X for Europe, not the traffic addon. I think I can buy and install UTX-E in safety but GEX might be a different beast, unless, I can turn it off what flying in NZ?

BTW nice efforts on Taupo and Hamilton...might have to take a look!

Hi Jay

VLC at this stage works best with default textures- The specific land classes were chosen for the default texture that shows in NZ. In saying that, any other textures will 'work' but as some users of GEX and UTX have noticed, their textures aren't the best match for NZ AND they install into/over the main/default texture directory which means changes are global.

As mentioned, if you are worried about the effects the textures will have in NZ, then you can try installing the GEX/UTX textures and their landclass in their own directory (i.e. UTXScenery) with two subfolders (Scenery and Texture)- Any included *.bgl files can go in 'Scenery' folder, and their replacement textures (either .bmp or .dds) into the 'texture' folder. This will mean that the textures will only be called by a landclass bgl in that scenery folder rather than the changes being global (and, in NZ, VLC will still use default textures). Im not sure if UTX/GEX actually include replacement landclass so if not, just copy the default worldLC.bgl into the scenery folder you have created.....it may be a bit of fiddling to get what you want smile.gif

I can't give specific advice unfortunately as I don't have either GEX or UTX .

Hi Timmo

Many thanks for that. I am beginning to understand how this works now!

I did decide to go with UTX2 for the moment. Really want to Europe looking a bit better than it is. The install hasn't seem to effected NZ or VLC, which is great because the UK looks populated now! Well at least at night.

Many thanks
Jay
