Hey guys, just picked up VLC last night however I don't feel as though it looks as nice as it should or as I have seen in screenshots. I was sort of expecting to be able to spot my own house from the air but maybe that was a big ask, haha.

Anyway, I was going to give VLC a reinstall to see if it made a difference, and saw that I needed to disable the VLC Autogen through the VLC config tool. So I untick the box, hit apply, but when I start the config tool up again it has defaulted back to being enabled, thus I'm unsure if I can uninstall VLC or not? What do I do in this situation?

Also just something out of curiosity (which sparked my belief that a reinstall might giving me 'better image quality'); I found this screenshot of the Chatham Is. comparing VLC to the default landclass. Now, I thought I would do my own testing to see if mine looked the same (checking and unchecking the VLC entries within the FSX scenery library pre-flight), and both options showed the same as the default textures. So with VLC enabled, it did NOT look like the second screenshot shown.

The thread I'm referring to is; http://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/showthread.php?t=17782

Any help would be very much appreciated, and I'm new to the forums so be nice, haha!

Cheers,
Jordan.

EDIT: NONE of my options in VLC config tool stick when I hit 'Apply'. I just tried them all and everytime I exit and restart the config tool application they are ALL back to the default values.

No doubt Tim will come back about the Config tool buttons.
VLC does not include the Chathams, so maybe you should select another screenshot to compare:) The Chathams is ready to go, and it's my job to build the installer, which is the only thing holding it up.

Ah, that clears it up! Thank you. I was doing some more testing and it definitely looks MUCH better (the land class in general) using VLC than the default textures. I still though I might have been able to house spot (similar look to that of googlemaps satellite imaging, however I guess the buildings and houses etc are random like the default FSX (but of course better looking)?

I would love to have that config stuff sorted - on that note; I don't have to leave the config tool running while I play FSX to see the changes take effect do I?

And lastly, do you think I should bother reinstalling VLC, or does all of this seem absolutely normal?

Cheers,
Jordan.

No don't reinstall. It's normal.

Hi there JordNZ

To start, no you don't need to keep the config tool running while you use the sim- Just set your settings, click apply and then exit.

As to why your settings aren't being saved- Is it all settings not being saved or only the VLC autogen textures?
What operating system are you using?
Do you have your own account on windows or do you have a separate gaming one etc (i.e. one without administrative privileges)

Lastly, although VLC is about as accurate as you can get without covering the country in aerial photos, it still uses the MS way of showing different landclasses- That is, for houses, a repeated texture of houses covers the area where the data says there is houses- The houses themselves are just a representation of what is there rather than the actual placement of each house in the country.

Hey, thanks for the reply Timmo!

It seems to be ALL settings that aren't being saved after hitting 'Apply' then 'Exit'. My operating system is Vista Home Prem. 32bit and I am the one and only (so of course with administrative rights) user on my laptop. Also, thank you for clearing up the question I had about the housing placement etc.

Cheers.

Ok- Can you send your log file (vlcconfig.log in your VectorLandClass installation directory to vectorlandclass@gmail.com)

I'll take a look at that and see what it tells me

Do you have VectorLandClass and FSX installed in the standard locations?

I can't seem to locate a .log file by that name. Theres a few other config and .txt files though. Everything is installed to the default locations. The only thing I manually added was the VLC and DTM folders to the scenery library as per the installation manual of VLC.

OK- you may not be able to see the extension of the file. Just send the text file (it actually is a .log file but windows explorer may show it as a .txt file depending on your settings)

Hmm the log file isn't telling me much apart from the fact that the program does appear to actually be moving the files.

Perhaps you could do a test for me?

If you could say set all features 'on', click Apply and exit (i.e. all streams, all roads, all lights, all tick boxes) then navigate to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\VectorLandClass\Scenery\InActive\

There should be no bgl files in that InActive folder? (Check and let me know)

Repeat the exercise and set all features 'off' (i.e. no streams, urban roads only, no lights, no tick boxes)- In this case the InActive folder should have a lot of *.bgl files? (Check and let me know)

My hunch is that the program is actually working, just not remembering what state it is in.....which may be due to antivirus programs? (These should be excluded from running in the FSX folder as a general rule anyway so set this up if you haven't already)

I reinstalled flight sim completely as per the 'clean install guide' on simviation and then reinstalled VLC over top. All seems to be working now, so I think the problem is sorted! I will update you if there is any issues again and will follow the steps in your last post. Not realyl sure what prompted me to fully reinstall but I had a gut feeling that it may fix the issue which it seemed to have done so.

Cheers!
