Thought it would be a good idea to keep all members photos from Whenuapai in one easy to access thread rather than separate topics scattered around the place- so please post them in replies here.

Here are a few of my own- I tried to keep my eyes on the planes this year, rather than my lens- as in previous shows it felt as though I'd missed all the action, so most of my shots are ground based only, of the show craft taxing, landing and taking off.

These first few of the Warbirds were snapped by my brother on the little point-and-shoot Panasonic Lumix I took around Europe last year- I was saving the juice in my Fujifilm S7000 for when the heavies came out later.

Iriqouis:

What we'd all come to see- surprisingly quiet to be honest, although the decibals shot up when it was shoved into reverse thrust on the short demonstation landing. Was really happy to finally see one of these put through it's paces as I missed the RAAF display last year at Wanaka due to the low cloudbase on the Saturday I attended:

The King Air- which performed on in a new formation along with four CT-4's, one on each wing and two directly behind it- I was talking to a Huey pilot later in the day and found out that all RNZAF helecopter pilots actually train on both the fixed wing aircraft mentioned in this display, before moving onto the Sioux, then the UH-1!!

"Pride of the fleet"

Terribly angled shots of the C-130 dry.gif

And the P3:

-And that's the last of my shots. I wasn't close enough to the crowd line to capture any decent snaps of 'Formation Thunder' or the F-18 unfortunately, although I'm expecting many others have.

The reason for this being that due to an amazing feat of luck, my name was drawn out of the 'Win a flight in a Huey' competition box, and at 3.45, I had to go attend a briefing down at the other end of the apron (hence the unusual perspective of the last shot of the Orion). I really must thank Paul (Naki) for this, who I bumped into when walking into the show, and stopped with him to fill out an entry form. We'd all been standing together near the tower watching the morning half of the show, but one of my eyes was getting really sore due to the crappy contact lenes I was wearing, so I went back to my car to get my sunnies. When I returned to watch the C17 performance in the afternoon, me and my brother had to find a new spot further down the flight line away from the loudspeakers, and lost sight of Paul. It was only when he came up behind us and tapped me on the shoulder saying he'd heard my name called out that I realised I had a voicemail message calling me over to the promo tent to collect my prize! Otherwise I would have never of known- thought it was a joke at first laugh.gif

I've got a few really cool vids and pics from the Huey flight after the show that I've posted here cool.gif This was definitely the best airforce open day show that I've been to out of the last three years. Look forward to seeing everyone else's snaps!

How did the USAF C-17 display compare with the RAAF one at Wanaka?

And it must be a looooong time since we had Bugs in NZ, too...hopefully that means we get F-35 visits in the future!

Some great photos indeed.
It brilliant when you can see photos the following day from an airshow.
If I had to pick a favourite it would be the last Orion shot, very nice indeed.

I wouldnt like to think that any photographers here see others as competition, that would be sad but its great that more and more people are taking good photos and sharing them with everyone.

Would have loved to have gone but there is an aircraft in the North Island that I will hopefully photograph soon so I couldnt plan to go far this weekend.

The photographic opportunities at Classic Fighters will be quite something with some special aircraft coming this year.
Due to potentially supplying photos to 5 magazines I wont be posting many for a while but Andrew has set the bench mark for others to aspire to so I look forward to seeing some great shots on this forum.

I did however take this photo of an RNZAF aircraft that came into Woodbourne and was heading back to Whenuapai last night.
Just experimenting so dont be too hard on me. cool.gif

By the way, just bought a nice new HD video camera today for use on all of my future air 2 air flights so that will be interesting.

Trolly, Was your friend standing to right right of 2 people with 2 camras eachand he was standing infront of 2 like half tents? as i was standing to just to the right of the light in pic 4, the one the German Messerschmitt went over and nearly hit its prop on while trying to get off the runway at full power cos it was about 2 feet away from getting crsuhed by the dc3.

No way that i can compete against those wonderful photos Andrew put i'll put a couple in anyway.

What is it with Airshows and the heat! Both Ardmore and Whenuapai were crackers this year, and both displays were awesome! The hardest thing was having the hotdog and chips vans placed on the tarmac, taking 30 minutes waiting in the queue, i nearly melted! My son fell asleep in our tent so i couldn't meet up unfortunately, but i hope all enjoyed the show.

Well I thought it was a good event- A lot bigger than I thought it would be so I got there much later than I thought after sitting in traffic for over an hour trying to get in! So, sorry for not being able to come meet up with people

The C-17 display was much better than the Wanaka one I thought- They really showed off its manoeuvreability well (those things can turn!)

haha Andrew I heard your name get called and I was like 'that lucky b*stard' haha- Hope the flight was good.

I didn't take any photos of aircraft (point and shoot digital cameras just don't cut it) but did get some god ones of the buildings for some future modelling.

Indeed- this topic is all about sharing! Thanks for the compliment Gav, look forward to your shots from Omaka as I won't be able to make the trip myself.

Not sure what you mean- in the morning, both me and my bro were standing at the crowdline with a camera each (don't think Naki) had one out, but I must have been walking to/from my car when the Messerschmitt was flying as I don't remember seeing it.

Interesting shots there too KBG- that's the first decent photo I've seen of the Checkers/Havards formation. Great new combo for 2009 eh?

And Fauville- that Vampire shot is stunning. Would make a great desktop background- you must have a pretty powerfull zoom on your camera to get results like that clapping.gif

Sweet F18 shots by the way Cambridge Dan- did you not take advantage of the media passes for your Uncle's magazine or whatever... I've heard they were very easy to obtain?

Cheers for posting the interior cockpit shots too Nzeddy- I was tossing up whether to join the big ques for a peep inside the various cockpits, or stay out in the sun and watch the show- ended up having a quick look in the Metroliner then joining the crowdline as I knew there was bound to be another NZFF'er who would post pics and save me the effort thumbup1.gif

Great pics everybody, looks like it was a really fascinating airshow. I wish I could have attended!!

Damn the C17 is a cool plane. Some RAAF guy told me how its the only aircraft that can deploy its reverse thrust in-flight, and therefore it can descend from 30000 feet, to the ground in around 2 minutes. ohmy.gif
